A Fine Example of the Japanese Silversmith's Art
A beautiful vase recently turned out at the Tenshodo factory, of which Kingoro Ezawa, who runs jewelery stores in many Japanese cities, is the proprietor, is illustrated on this page, and is representative work of the modern Japanese art in silver.

Image

The work was done by Prof. Unno and was purchased by Prince Ito, the resident general of Korea, for the purpose of presenting the same to Dr. Radd of the Yale University. The inscription on the reverse, which is in Japanese, is in the handwriting of the great statesman of Japan.

Silverwares are often marked simply 'Yamato Bros.', 'Kobe', and sometimes with the additional words 'Pure Silver'. Another mark noted on Yamato Bros. wares is a target with an arrow passing through the centre of it (two o'clock to eight o'clock).

KHECHEONG

Club Street, Honam, Canton

Image

A period description of the shops in Club Street:

Shops exclusively inviting the patronage of Europeans constitute several streets in Honam, and notably "Club Street," as it is called, which runs parallel with the river to the South of a small canal which debouches Shops in Honam behind the Red Fort. Here, first in order, will be found Hipqua's Lacker-ware shop, where tables, tea-poys, desks, work-boxes, cigarboxes, etc., etc. in various degrees of fineness and cost may be obtained or bespoken. A handsome round table in fine lacker with central design in gilding may be had here for about $15. A nest of four tea-poys costs from $5 to $12. Farther on is Lee-ching's shop, where Canton-made jewellery is displayed in large quantities; and in close proximity is the shop of Yancheong, where Canton silks and gauzes can be best procured. The principal attraction in this Street is however, the noted establishment of Ho-a-ching, whose ivory-carvings are superior to everything that has been attempted in this branch of art. Ho-a-ching (which is only the shopname under which two brothers carry on the business founded many years ago by their father) is noted not less for genuine honesty than for the excellence of the wares offered for sale. Here, in addition to ivory carvings ot all descriptions, from caskets at $250 to little figures equalling the workmanship of Japan but sold at much more reasonable prices, carvings in tortoise-shell and jewellery of various descriptions can be obtained. Very handsome ornaments are manufactured by Ho-a-ching from a horny substance of a deep yellow colour which forms the crest of a species of crane found in Cochin-China. Seal-cutting is also practised with great skill by the workmen of this establishment. Farther on are the shops of Khe-cheong, a good silversmith, and Hung-cheong, one of the leading and most respectable jewellers. Minor establishments tempt visitors with miscellaneous displays of lacquer-ware, rice-paper paintings, and the multitude of miscellaneous articles usually grouped under the designation of "curios."

B.P. De SILVA

Few Eastern jewellers can honestly claimed to have received the patronage of royality as often as Mr. B.P. de Silva, of High Street, who numbers amongst his patrons the Duke of Connaught, the King of Siam, and the Sultan of Johore. The business was established in 1860 by Mr. Silva's father. All kinds of precious stones, jewellery of rare and unique design, and silverware in various styles of native workmanship are to be seen at this shop. Mr. de Silva also does a considerable import and export trade, and with his large and experienced staff is in a position to execute all kinds of work connected with his business.
