The Pairpoint Mfg. Co., New Bedford, Mass., have a handsome new flat ware pattern which will be on the market shortly. They also show a large number of novelties among which are good things in collar button boxes, jewel caskets, bouquet holders, candlesticks, manicure sets, thermometers and some really excellent and useful orange holders which must be seen to be appreciated. In tea sets three new patterns are shown all good and tasteful. Since the 22d inst. the factory has been working full time and in some departments previous to that time the men have been working until 9 P.M.

The Pairpont Corporation salesrooms have undergone a thorough renovation in the way of redecorating, new lighting fixtures, and other changes, and are now among the handsomest in the Downtown District, they make a very attractive setting for the 1914 line which includes many new things not usually heard of in cut glass, among them being cucumber, cranberry and apple sauce sets with decorations of the fruit or vegetable for which they are intended. There are also some unusual salad bowl designs in lettuce, tomato and other vegetable patters.

The Pairpoint Corporation

Among the lines of cut glass, lamps, sheffield reproductions and brass goods on display in the handsome new showrooms of the Pairpoint Corporation at 43-47 West 23rd Street, are numerous new things that have already established themselves with the buyers who have seen them. The lamp display, being entirely new, is particularly impressive in its special section of the showrooms. In addition to the great array of glass and mahogany portable lamps previously described in 'THE SALESMAN' there are several sumptuous electric urns, some with standards of brass and others with mahogany portables. One rich style has a classic mahogany base of three slender pillars, supporting a tastefully decorated covered shade which completely encloses the light. Another feature of the lamp display is the collection of candle lamps of mahogany with decorated glass shades.

ln the cut glass display the new “Murillo" pattern—a modest priced design exploiting two kinds of flowers and a butterfly—has proved a successful companion to the “Viscaria" and other popular designs. Then there are some new patterns on separate pieces and short lines, including a pond lily cutting on flower pans, and some deep rich engravings exploiting various kinds of fruit on bowls and other tableware articles

Pairpoint Mfg Co. Embarrassed

Receivers Appointed by the U. S. Circuit CourtInterview with President Cook

New Bedford, Mass., Feb. 8.—In the United States Circuit Court in Boston, yesterday afternoon. Judge Lowell appointed Gilbert Allen, L. Snow and Clarence A. Cook, all of this city, receivers for the Pairpoint Mfg. Co., one of the largest silver plated ware, decorated china and cut glass manufacturing concerns in America, capitalized at $1,000,000. and employing 900 to 1,000 skilled hands.

The action was brought to a culmination by a friendly suit of the Wakefield Institution for Savings, of Wakefield. R. I., on a demand note for $5,000, but the real petitioners are the officials of the company. The embarrassment of the Pairpoint Co. is the culmination of a long period of business depression which has persistently hovered around the plated goods trade. "It is due directly to cheapness of silver," said president Clarence A. Cook, in explaining it to The Circular representative. "For the past six years the company has been doing a losing business, and now it has reached the end of its rope. We found ourselves unable to meet our obligations as they matured, and there was only one thing to be done.

"When silver was quoted at $1.35, as it was in 1892. we had a good market for plated ware, and did a good business, but since then sterling has dropped rapidly, and 65 or 70 cents is a common quotation. When people buy novelties such as the Pairpoint Co. makes, they can get sterling goods for a little more than the cost of plated goods: therefore, we are driven out of the markets. For six years the concern has steadily lost money."

According to President Cook, the paid up capital of the corporation is $944,400 and the indebtedness about $500,000 The assets are amply in excess of this sum. The amount of assets has not yet been ascertained. "For myself," said Mr. Cook, "I hope to see some portions of the concern reorganized."

The Pairpoint Mfg. Co. was one of the most valuable industries of this city. It was started here in a small way in 1881, and as it has grown it has cemented itself to the local life in a peculiar way. Practically all of its 900 or 1,000 hands have been young men and women of this city, who have grown in the business and become skilled workers. The weekly pay roll was about $10,000 in the maximum, though, through the peculiarities of the business—the rush season and the flat season—it sometimes fell to $6,000 or $7,000. Last year the concern's pay roll amounted to about $320,000. The factories are all here, but there were large salesrooms maintained at New York. San Francisco, Chicago. Montreal and Boston. President Cook has been in charge of the company's affairs only since 1896, and has made a good showing.

The Pairpoint Mfg. Co.. New Bedford, Mass., have completed an extensive addition to their factory, none too soon, however, to enable them to cope with their fall trade. The Pairpoint Co. have gained the name of making popular goods, and it will not be at all surprising if another extension of plant is necessary in the near future.

THE PAIRPOINT CO.'s ORANGE HOLDER

Image

The holder which is the subject of aboye illustration has had a wide publicity given it thanks to its many good qualities. It is made in several patterns, all excellent and has proved an excellent seller. The illustration makes further description unnecessary but dealers who carry the article in stock will find it profitable. A dainty little booklet on orange goods will be mailed on application to the company.

Special Drive In Decorated Porcelain

A special drive is now being made by the Pairpoint Mfg. Co. in their lines of decorated porcelain and glass productions, including their Crown Pairpoint china, Crown Milano glass and other wares, which are now being offered at their New York salesrooms, 38 Murray St., at decidedly advantageous terms. Among the pieces in decorated glass are shown assortments of cracker jars, collar and cuff boxes, sugar and cream sets, and like articles for the cabinet and boudoir, in decorations of various colors, with flower effects with gilt ornamentation. These pieces are trimmed with gold or silver mountings and are satin lined. In their Crown Pairpoint china are some very large and finely painted vases, being French china blanks decorated by American artists.

Apprehending a demand for an increase in wages by the 350 glass cutters in its employ at New Bedford, which demand was to be enforced by a strike on the following Monday, the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company closed its doors on Saturday, April 6, and posted notice of " an indefinite shutdown." Officers of the employees' national organization endeavored to interview the employer some days after the lockout, but the employer would not receive them. The general officers indicated the possibility of a strike of blowers in sympathy with the cutters and by way of reprisal, an expedient which would seriously embarrass the employer for a longer period than was desirable at a time when business was brisk. The Board mediated between the parties and brought about a meeting, which was adjourned to another day. In the meantime further advice was given and accepted by the employees, which led to an agreement.
