ALBERT EDWARD SHIPLEY

Wimbledon

Mr. Albert Edward Shipley, the Wimbledon jeweller who was struck down in his shop by burglars on the night of October 31 appeared at the local police-court yesterday to tell his story about the affair.

There were two charges and three accused before the court. The first charge referred to a burglary on the 25th of October, accused being Albert Johnson, Walter Alexander Clutterbuck, amd Henry Harry Bowyer, all of Brixton. Johnson and Clutterbuck were further charged with burglary on the 31st of October, with stealing property worth £70 and also with seriously injuring Mr. Shipley. The Bench committed Bowyer, who pleaded "not guilty" the first charge, bail being allowed. The more serious charge against Johnson and Clutterbuck was then taken.

Mr. Shipley said that on the 31st of October he entered his shop at midnight, and as he was about to lock the door he was struck on the head and fell unconscious. It was found in the morning that the keys of the safe had been taken from him. Altogether the articles stolen from the shop were worth £500.

A constable said he found the jeweller lying unconscious, and by the side of him lay a steel jemmy, a tobacco pouch, and an empty pocket-book. An inspector remarked that the name Clutterbuck was found written with an address in the book. A young sister of Johnson identified the note-book as one belonging to her father. Two more charges with reference to alleged offences at Clapham shops were then preferred against the two prisoners, who were committed for trial.

ORTNER & HOULE

3, St. James's Street, London

At the Marlborough-street police-court to-day, Frederick Richard Stone, alias Killog (28), was remanded on charges of committing extensive frauds on London tradesmen, whereby he obtained jewellery of the value of £1,100 from Mr Henry Houle, of Orton and Houie, St. James's-street. He went to a respectable firm of solicitors, and (representing that he was entitled to much property) ordered a post-nuptial settlement to be made. He then said he wanted a good tailor, and was recommended to one. From this tailor he obtained a recommendation to the jeweller named, and selected jewellery to the amount named. He tendered a cheque in payment, but it was returned marked "Refer to drawer." It was some time before the police found him, but he was arrested in Regent-street last evening. He struggled against capture, and attempted to escape. He had been convicted before under other names. He had 7d in the bank.

JEWEL ROBBERY

Mr. L. Cohen, diamond mounter at Messrs. Bellinger, Altshuler, and Co. (Limited's), Hatton Garden, has been robbed of £1600 in jewellery at his house in Gerrard-street, Islington.

The robbery took place while his wife was out shopping. On coming back she found the safe unlocked and the articles gone.

The stolen diamonds include a packet of gems worth £200, recently purchased by Mr. Cohen, who for years, it is understood, had been collecting diamonds with a view to starting a business himself.

The business of Nicholaus Carl Bellinger and Isaac Altshuler was established in 1899.

The firm entered their mark, 'B&A', contained within an oblong punch, with the London Assay Office on the 7th May 1902.
