Charles Henry Farquharson was born on the 9th April 1810, he was the son of the London jeweller John Russell Farquharson. He was enrolled into the George Watson’s Hospital School at Edinburgh, an institution that steered their pupils into apprenticeships with skilled trades, on the 3rd April 1821. Four years later on the 23rd July 1825, his indentures were booked with the Edinburgh silversmith, George McHattie. He married Janet Romanes at Edinburgh on the 27th April 1832, and established his business in 1838.

He is likely to be the same Charles H. Farquharson who was appointed to the rank of Captain in the 1st (City of Edinburgh) Rifle Volunteers on the 23rd July 1860.

Charles Henry Farquharson died on the 30th October 1882:

P.G. WILSON

Inverness

P.G. Wilson - Inverness - c.1870

P.G. Wilson - Inverness - 1887

This was the business of Peter George Wilson. Born on the 2nd April 1843 at New Keith, Banffshire. He served his time as apprentice to his father, a jeweller also named Peter Wilson, in the mid 1850's and he opened his first shop at 100, Church Street, Inverness in the mid 1860's, he moved later that same year to 8, Union Street, Inverness.

Peter Wilson was a very canny man and never missed a trick where business was concerned. He cornered the market when gold was discovered in Scotland, paying over the odds for every ounce mined, but reaped the rewards when the end product was finished, as few could genuinely claim that their wares were made from real Scottish gold. In 1866 Peter Wilson had the very good fortune to be patronised by the Baron Rothschild and his party when they were touring the Highlands and when visiting Inverness they acquired several pieces from Wilson. Later, when the Rothschilds visited their friends, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Wilson's jewellery was much admired by them and in 1867 Wilson was summoned to appear at Balmoral with a selection of his jewellery and was favoured with several orders from the Queen and the Royal Family. It was an association that was to last several years and in the following year, 1867, Peter Wilson was granted the Royal Warrant.

In 1873 Peter Wilson removed to 44, High Street and on the 27th March 1879 he married Helen Whyte at Aberlour near the town of Elgin.

In 1882 Wilson purchased the old established business of Robert Naughten II at 27, Church Street, Inverness and in 1889 he moved to 1, High Street. His wife, Helen, died in March 1901 and Wilson relocated to 50, Church Street.

Peter Wilson's business was disposed of in 1915 by a public auction. It was a sad end to a once thriving business, as the sale details stated 'The auctioneer has every confidence in recommending the quality of the stock, although the goods and premises have been neglected on account of the propreitor's ill health'.

Peter George Wilson was to survive for another ten years, he passed away in January 1925. Items of his manufacture were marked ' PGW. INS' or 'P.G.WILSON INVERNESS'.

FINLAY & FIELD

72, Buchanan Street, Glasgow

Image
Finlay & Field - Glasgow - 1851

Finlay & Field entered marks at both the Glasgow and Edinburgh assay offices in 1843. It is a little uncertain about which marks they used, but they certainly used a 'F & F' contained within an oblong punch with clipped corners and also possibly a 'J.F' in an oblong, that John Finlay entered in 1828.

They were victims during the week long Glasgow bread riots of 1848. On Sunday the 4th March their shop in Buchanan Street was plundered and jewellery and watches to the value of £1,648 was stolen by the mob.

An example of the work and mark of Finlay & Field.

A long condiment spoon 5 1/2" (14cm) in length and weighing 17 grams. It is made in the Fiddle and Thread pattern and typically single struck, a characteristic often found in Scottish flatware. The bowl is gilded on both sides so its intended use may have been for salt.

It was assayed at the Glasgow office in 1847.

JAMES MORRISON

This is likely to be an example of the work of James Morrison of Fochabers:

'JM' - 'JM' - 'JM'

A teaspoon 5 1/2" (14cm) in length. Fiddle pattern without shoulders.

James Morrison was born at Aberdeen in 1795, he served his apprenticeship under Peter Lambert (Six years as from 5th November 1810). The apprenticeship started in Aberdeen and was completed at Berwick on Tweed, as his Master moved to that town in 1813. James Morrison returned to Aberdeen in 1817 where he is thought to have worked as a journeyman for many years. He moved to Fochabers in 1850 and set up business on his own account for probably the first time in his career, he was to stay in the town for around fifteen years before once again returning to Aberdeen in c.1865. He died in 1877, aged 82 years.

Image

Image

Image
John Munro - Perth - 1907

John Munro established his business in 1870, but he also continued that of David Munro, who was perhaps his father, that was noted by at least 1841. David Munro was born at Perth in c.1818.

David Munro entered his mark, 'DM' contained within a shield, with the Edinburgh Assay Office, and it is possible that the mark was continued to be used by John.

In 1891, John Munro was noted at Boyd's Buildings, 85, Canal Street, Perth.

The address of 14, Charlotte Street was also the one noted for David in 1891, and as can be seen from the above advertisements, a move occurred to 5, Kinnoull Street between 1905 and 1907.

John Munro continued in business until at least 1915.

Robertson & Watt were established in 1841 and are still in business today.

In 1862 the business appears to be in the hands of James Robertson and William Watt. At that time they were located at 24, Victoria Road, and 8, Westport, Dundee.

DAVID MACGREGOR

David McGregor was born at Perth on the 30th September 1839, he trained at the Edinburgh engravers, Begbie & Lee and Thomas Holiday. He returned to Perth to work at Constable & McGregor's (Isaac Constable and Albert McGregor) workshops at 40, George Street in 1863. He continued this business on his own account as from 1875. He was granted the Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria on the 14th October 1893. He died at Bridge of Earn on the 7th April 1909. His business at Perth was to continue into the second half of the 20th century.

The Queen's Badge of the Glasgow International Exhibition

The Executive Council selected the design submitted by Mr. Macgregor, art jeweller and engraver, of Perth. The badge is now completed, and was on view last month. Both in design and execution it is a most artistic production. The outline is a pointed oval, the margin is a belt of gold looped up at the base, and upon it is raised the inscription in mediaeval characters, "Glasgow International Exhibition, 1888." Concentric with the outer belt is the principal part of the design – a massive gold oval, with fourteen carved fleur-de-lis alternating with fourteen Scottish pearls, radiating out and resting on the belt. On the margin of this oval is a raised band, with the motto, "Palmam qui meruit ferat." The band is enriched with diamonds at the points. On the field in the centre is a figure of Fame, bearing a winged and snaked staff, and holding out a wreath of laurel, all carved in relief from the solid gold. The field shows a mosaic-like trellis of diamond-shaped panels, with the Glasgow arms repeated about seventeen times, cut on a space of about an inch surface, with minute diamonds set in the crossings, giving the field a starry-like effect. Immediately above the central oval is an imperial crown, standing upon which, and forming the apex of the design, is a miniature Scottish lion rampant, carved free in gold. Within the loop at the base of the design is a Royal helmet and gorget, with heraldic mantling, exquisitely carved from the solid gold. The following is the inscription on the back of the badge:–"Glasgow International Exhibition, State visit of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, 22nd August, 1888."

LORD BREADALBANE'S PRESENTATION

Image

The above sketch is taken from photograph of one of the silver vases which are to be presented to the Marquis of Breadalbane by the tenantry on his different estates. It will be remembered that a meeting of the tenantry was held at Killin, when it was decided to present his Lordship with two silver vases, valued at 300 guineas, on the occasion of his Lordship receiving the Order of the Garter. Mr David MacGregor, silversmith, Perth, was the successful competitor for the vases, and the workmanship which he has shown in the execution of the order shows that the work was entrusted to competent hands. On the broad central field between the wreaths, the chief parts of the design are displayed. In the centre is the chain or collar of the Garter with St George pendant, while the Breadalbane arms, chased and engraved, are enclosed. On the other side is the Breadalbane monogram and coronet. The four quarters of the centre are occupied with scenes of Taymouth Castle, the Queen on Loch Tay, Kilchurn Castle, and Loch Awe, and Forest Lodge with Loch Tulla. The cup rises from the base of fluted chased acanthus and roses, while the stalk is encircled with a Maquis' coronet, and chased boarheads and ornament resting on the lower base of chased work. The cover of the cup is surmounted by a royal stag on mountain top. The body of the cover has a representation of a boar chase, and on the other side a picture of a stag chase. The handles spring gracefully from a circle holding highland targets, and are surmounted by the boar's heads and clasped by the stag's heads at the finials. The base is formed of Ben Cruachan granite. The inscription is as follows:-

To the Most Honourable Gavin, Marquis of Breadalbane, Lord Stewart of the Household of Her Majesty Queen Victoria, Lord High Commissioner to the General Assemby of the Church of Scotland. 1894 - Presented to his Lordship on receiving the dignity of the Most Honourable Order of the Garter.

The vases are excellent specimens of the silversmith's work, and are handsome in appearance, standing 26 inches in height. The sketch given above is from a photograph of Mr Magnus Jackson, photographer, Princes Street, Perth.
