Established in 1835.

DEATH OF VETERAN IRVINE WATCHMAKER

Mr James Gilchrist, one of the oldest working jewellers and watchmakers in Scotland, died at his residence, Helana, Irvine, in his 81st year, on Wednesday evening. Mr Gilchrist was in business in Irvine for over 50 years. He retired a few years ago, and was succeeded by one of his sons, but his retirement was only nominal, and he continued to spend several hours every week-day in his old workshop in Bridgegate, and even when over 80 years of age was engaged regularly on small and very fine work.

Mr Gilchrist is survived by two sons, a daughter, and a grand-daughter. Both of his sons are in business as jewellers and watchmakers.

James Gilchrist was noted as a member of the Incorporation of Hammermen of Irvine in 1906.

THOMAS BRYCE

Edinburgh

A shocking case of cruelty and neglect came before the Sheriff's Criminal Court, at Edinburgh, on Monday. A working jeweller, named Thomas Bryce, and his wife, residing in South Elgin-street, pleaded guilty to neglecting to supply their four children-aged respectively three months, and three, five, and seven years with food and clothing, and reducing them to such a state of emaciation and weakness that their lives were endangered. The children, when found by the police, were in an indescribable state of filth. The prisoners were each sentenced to six months' imprisonment.

D & R

Mark noted on a watchcase:

Image
D&R - Glasgow - 1917

The Incorporation of Goldsmiths of Edinburgh, who hold the Glasgow records, state that the entry that accompanies this mark is "almost illegible" but transcribes it as "F[?] Ducommun[?]". They state that the sponsors location is London.

It is thought there may a connection with the below bankruptcy notice:

F. Ducommun, 138 Minories, London, E.C., watch company's manager, lately carrying on business at 59-61 Hatton Garden, London, E.C., watch importer
