GEORGE CLUNES

Motherwell

DOUBLE TRAGEDY AT MOTHERWELL

A terrible tragedy occurred at Motherwell on Wednesday evening. A master jeweller named George Clunes shot dead his assistant, named John Laing. and then killed himself. Both were young men, and took a prominent part in religious affairs locally. It is thought that a dispute about business may have been the cause of the trouble.

Source: Evening Express and Evening Mail - 25th February 1904

The business of Robert Clunes was recorded at Hamilton Place, 109, Brandon Street, Motherwell. This business opened in May 1892, Clunes already having premises at 45, South Bridge Street, Airdrie, since at least the late 1870's. Robert Clunes died in January 1897.

GEORGE THOMAS WHITWORTH

Rosehearty, Aberdeenshire

George Thomas Whitworth, who has several aliases and is described as a returned convict, was brought to Aberdeen on Wednesday evening from Swansea, where he had been apprehended on a charge of stolen 23 watches and articles of jewellery in Rosehearty and New Pitsligo, Aberdeenshire. Accused is an Englishman about 50 years of age. Nearly twelve months ago he commenced business in Rosehearty as a watchmaker and jeweller. He induced a brother tradesman to give him some stock, and afterwards he obtained numerous watches, &c., for repair. One morning about six months ago he disappeared, taking most of the stock with him. Quantities of the stolen goods have been recovered in Aberdeen and in several English towns.

JOHN HAMILTON & SON

41, George Street, Edinburgh

Between Saturday evening and Monday morning, the shop of Mr. Hamilton, a jeweller in George-street, Edinburgh, was entered by thieves, and jewellery valued at over £3,000 stolen. Entry had been made through a work-shop In the rear, and several buildings had been crossed to get there. The masonry was dislodged at a window, but finding this difficult, the thieves had turned to an iron-sheathed door and broken through it. To get from the work-shop to the shop they descended to a cellar and mined through the solid wall into the shop. They took scarcely anything but gold articles.
