LOVING CUP FOR EX-PRESIDENT BOAL

At the quarterly meeting of the Western Association of Stove Manufacturers, held at the Auditorium in Chicago, on Tuesday, July 9, a very pleasing incident was the presentation of a loving cut to ex-President Stanhope Boal of the National Association of Stove Manufacturers. For some time past the members of the national body have been desirous of expressing in tangible form their high esteem for Mr. Boal, as well as their appreciation of his distinguished services during the period in which he presided over the deliberations of the National Association. A loving cup was decided to be most appropriate for the purpose and the matter was placed in the hands of Jeremiah Dwyer of Detroit, to whom subscriptions for the testimonial were forwarded from practically every member of the National Association of Stove Manufacturers.

Image

The cup, of which an illustration is presented herewith, was made by hand to order by Spauiding & Co., silversmiths, of Chicago, and is described by them as follows: The material is of silver 950-1000 fine. The design is in Greek lines and the workmanship is in Martelé or hand wrought. The decoration of the handles and the upper part of the cup consists of geranium leaves and flowers and the shield in which the inscriptions are etched is surrounded with beautifully wrought clover and clover leaves.

The inscription upon the face of the cup reads as follows: "Stanhope Boal, Fourteenth President National Association of Stove Manufacturers.” Upon the second panel are the following words underneath the monogram of the National Association: “From the members, in grateful appreciation of his distinguished services from May, 1899, to May, 1901." On the third panel is the great seal of the State of Kentucky, in which Mr. Boal was born, and the very appropriate motto, “ United We Stand, Divided We Fall."

In the absence of President Parlln of the National Association of Steve Manufacturers it devolved upon Frederic W. Gardner, as first vice-president of the association, to present the testimonial, which he did in the following words:

“ On behalf of the National Association of Stove Manufacturers i have a word to say. it is a word of cheer and good will from its entire membership to a gentleman who has served them faithfully and well as their president for the past two years.

“The duties of this office are full of cares and responsibilities and are undertaken at all times with the sincere desire to show by every act and in every way a full appreciation of the high honor conferred upon the recipient.

“It must be a great satisfaction, at the end of the longest term of service granted its presidents, to know. when one has served to the best of his ability, that a feeling of gratitude exists. Such a feeling, as well as one of enduring affection, is expressed in the beautiful testimonial which I now ask former President Stanhope Boal to accept from the membership of the National Association of Stove Manufacturers.”

While Mr. Boal was evidently taken by surprise at the beautiful gift of the members of the association, he responded to the speech of presentation in a happy vein and in appropriate terms:

Thinking that some of those who contributed to the testimonial might desire a picture of it, Mr. Dwyer forwarded to each subscriber a handsomely printed artists' proof of the cup, suitable for framing and hanging in their offices. The printing is on heavy calendered paper about 15 x 10 inches in size, and bears as a caption, “ Testimonial to President Stanhope Boal from the Members of the National Association of Stove Manufacturers."

H. A. Spaulding, president of Spaulding & Co., left Chicago Wednesday for New York, whence he sailed Aug. 1 for Europe on La Normandie. He will combine business and pleasure on the trip and most of his time probably will be spent at the Paris store of the firm at 36 Avenue de l' Opera. He probably will not return to the World's Fair city before November.

CHICAGO

Western manufacturers of silverware say that although the output of silver bullion has been increasing every year for a long time, yet the cost of skilled labor in the trade has lately advanced so constantly that the finished product cannot now be turned out at a cost any less than when the visible supply of metal was much smaller and the market price of it much lower. Indirectly many other advanced costs contribute to swell the selling price of silver plate notwithstanding the far larger output of the industry that general prosperity makes necessary. Aside from the growing greater demand for such wares and the consequent increased competition in artistic finish tending to sustain prices in the market, a sales manager, who declined to be quoted, suggested as a further explanation of the strong market, the increased general cost of doing business and the apparent desire of many new purchasers of such wares to have them made as expensively as possible and in support of this view he cited the recent purchase by former Senator W. A. Clark, of Montana, of a silver dinner service from the Spauldings in this city costing $100,000 to make, and he also recalled quite a list of others from the records of the year in the precious metal industries of Chicago.

Though the Spauldings seem to be somewhat expanding their fine silver ware output, the Peacocks seem to be confining their manufactures to a few lines of high-grade gold ornaments, and the W. K. Cowan Company are expanding their various lines to cover almost every grade and class of plate and other products from the precious metals and alloys.

Spaulding & Co. have obtained from the Spanish government a copy of the coat-of-arms of Christopher Columbus, which will be reproduced in enamel, showing its colors, upon the silver passes to the Fair which that firm is engraving for the members of the Veragua family. At the same time the firm will have completed medals which will deck the breasts of the officers and department chiefs in the national and local managing boards of the Fair.
