Spaulding & Co. have been displaying in their windows lately the beautiful "Oconomowoc Yacht Club Challenge Cup" which, valued at $500, is the chief of the prizes to be competed for at the regatta on Lake La Belle in July. This trophy has been made from special designs; it stands 25 inches high, and is probably the most artistic yachting prize ever competed for on inland waters in America.

The return of Henry A. Spaulding to the head of affairs at the State and Monroe street jewelry establishment has marked the opening of a greater number of precious stones, set jewels, Parisian nouveaues, rich pottery and beautiful pieces of dainty furniture than has ever before been seen in this city. Frequent as, indeed, have been the expressions of surprise that Spaulding & Co. or any other house should venture the collection of so great a quantity of high-class objects, the firm’s confidence in the appreciation which they are meeting with is unshaken, and every day will add to the exquisite creations in what is, indeed, the treasure house of the West.

Henry A. Spaulding, president of Spaulding & Co., has tendered his resignation to the board of directors of the corporation. The reason assigned is a need of rest, Mr. Spaulding having worked indefatigably to bring the company to its present high position in the retail trade. The stock held by him will be purchased by the corporation ; but the name, being incorporated, will not be changed. The fiscal year ends Feb. 15, and the resignation will be accepted at the board meeting then held. Mr. Spaulding and family will leave the latter part of the month for the Continent, and a tour of Japan is stated to be among the probabilities of the trip. After their travels, which will continue until the Fall, the family will settle in New York.

CHICAGO

Spaulding & Co., whose retail storehouse of jewels objets d'art is an establishment in which Chicagoans feel an intense pride, are just now taking their first annual inventory ; the figures resulting are sure to be most gratifying, as the volume of sales has exceeded their most sanguine expectations by at least a third; ever since Christmas the store has been thronged with customers daily.

Spaulding & Co. have commenced making preparations to take possession of their new store at State and Jackson Sts., in which they expect to be fully settled by July 10 or 15 - It will be a Herculean task to transfer their stock, but once it is accomplished they will be in a veritable palace. The new street clock being made for this firm by the E. Howard Watch and Clock Co. is nearly finished.

Spaulding & Co., although established as the successors of Matson & Co. not yet a year, have become recognized as a house capable of executing orders for everything which can be fashioned from the precious metals. Up to date this one establishment has received orders for no less than 17 sterling silver prize cups, each costing from $100 to $400, to be awarded at the American Horse Show which meets here from October 30 to November 9. These 17 cups are in addition to the prize costing $500, and contributed by Spaulding & Co. themselves.

H. A. Spaulding, the head of our largest retail jewelry establishment, sails from Havre on the French line steamer, Gascogne, on the 28th of this month, and will reach Chicago, October 8th, having spent several months, as the representative of this State, at the Paris International Exposition. Advices from Paris tell the trade here that the Paris branch house of Spaulding & Co., has had a most successful and profitable business since the day of its opening, and that the American silverware made by the Gorham Manufacturing Company is having a great sale, both at wholesale to the Parisian jewelers and through Spaulding & Co. at retail.

It was generally supposed that when the Spaulding & Co., vacated their present location, which was built for them and taken possession of by their predecessors, N. Matson & Co., in 1872, the building’s career as a home for the jewelry business would be ended. Such, however, is not the case. It leaked out during the past week that Hyman, Berg & Co., have taken a sub-lease of the store which will date from May 1, 1892, and run for a number of years. Spaulding & Co.’s lease holds during that time and although they will shortly take possession of their new store now in course of alteration at the corner of State and Jackson Sts., they no doubt draw the line on a competitor stepping in till their year is up.
