ISADORE GOLDWART

410, St. Catherine Street, Montreal

GET LOOT WORTH $25,000

Safe Blowers Use Nitro-Glycerine to Break Into Montreal Jeweler's Strong Box but Leave No Clues

Montreal, Can., Sept. 29.—On the night of Sept. 26 the jewelry store of Isadore Goldwart, 410 St. Catherine St., was entered by burglars, who obtained admission through a hat shop next door. They smashed a window in the rear of the hat shop and then cut their way through a brick wall separating the two stores.

They then blew open the safe with nitro-glycerine and obtained jewelry from the safe and show cases valued at $25,000. The robbery was evidently the work of experts and the job must have occupied several hours.

Only goods of genuine value were taken. The loss was not discovered until Mr. Goldwart came to the store at eight o'clock the next morning. The loss is covered by insurance.

There are no clues by which the burglars can be traced.

NATHAN JACOBS

Forced at the revolver's point to tell the combination of his safe, Nathan Jacobs, jeweler, 390½ Yonge Street, was then robbed of $375 in cash and jewelry valued at $1,700, first having been gagged and bound to his bed by three gunmen about three o'clock, on the morning of Nov. 12th. He was found by Louis Winkler, his optician, the following morning and released. No trace has been found of the thieves. The same store was despoiled to the extent of $900 last summer.

STEAL MONEY AND GEMS

Toronto, Can., Jeweler Held Up by Three Men Who Loot Store After Binding and Gagging Him

Toronto, Can., Nov. 13.—Nathan Jacobs, jeweler, of 390½ Yonge St., complained to the police yesterday morning that he had been bound and gagged in his room above the store by three men, who robbed the store of $375 in cash and diamond rings to the value of $1,100. He closed the store at about 11 o'clock Thursday night and retired to his apartments on the third floor. Some time between 2 and 3 o'clock in the morning, he heard a rap at the door and on inquiring who was there a voice replied that it was the police and that his front door had been found unlocked.

He went down and was confronted by three men who presented revolvers. The leader of the gang said, "Hand over your keys and the combination of your safe, and make no noise or you are a dead man." He obeyed and was forced back to his room where he was tied to the bed and gagged. The robbers then went below, unlocked the safe, secured the money and diamonds and left a number of watches and less expensive jewelry scattered over the floor.

Jacobs was not released until 9 A. M., when a boy employed as a messenger arrived. Finding the front door locked he forced an entrance by the rear and on learning the condition of affairs summoned Louis Winkler, Jacobs' optician, who released his employer. The police were notified and given a list of the missing goods.

The same store was robbed last July of jewelry valued at about $900.

DEATH OF MOSES BILSKY

Veteran Jeweler of Ottawa, Can., Passes Away in His Ninety-fifth Year After a Long Career of Achievement

Ottawa, Can., Jan. 6.—Moses Bilsky, gold miner, soldier and prominent jeweler of Alliance, passed away suddenly on Jan. 4, at his home, 406 Daly Ave., at the advanced age of 94 years. He had been in good health till the last and had even called a friend on the 'phone a short time before a heart attack closed a life that had been filled with adventure and lived with a clear record as a man of real sterling character.

At the age of 14 Mr. Bilsky came from Russia, lived for a time in Montreal, then in 1857 came to Ottawa, where his name was to be later known and honored for more than one generation.

Of an adventurous nature, the Cariboo gold fields cast a spell over young Bilsky, although no Pullman cars were running to the fields then. His six weeks' travel led across America and after tasting the life a time he decided to return to San Francisco. He next figured in the uniform of a United States trooper, and was wounded on the day of Lincoln's assassination, doing his share in quelling a riot.

About 1870 Mr. Bilsky returned to Ottawa and opened a store on Rideau St. as a jeweler. Success came and stayed with the business, until in a few years his three sons were taken into partnership and the firm became Bilsky & Sons. In 1915 the reins of active management were laid down and the business became Bilsky, Ltd., still located on Rideau St. within a few yards of the first store.

Mr. Bilsky was the first Jewish citizen of Ottawa and ever took a keen interest in the advance of the race to which he belonged. He was responsible for the opening of the first synagogue here, and delighted to see the Zionist movement going ahead.

A large family survive, a widow, five sons and six daughters.
