PIERRE-PHILIPPE ROUSSEAU

Place Thionville 14, Paris

An example of the work and mark of Pierre-Philippe Rousseau, a Fiddle and Thread ladle, 14" (36cm) in length and weighing 8 oz (250 gm).

Image

Member Blakstone supplied the following information:

Pierre-Philippe Rousseau, master under the ancien régime 18 Dec 1776, with this mark (PPR with a rose with a star above) first recorded 1808. He was a flatware maker at 14 Place Thionville. Succeeded 17 Nov 1820 by Jean-Baptiste Andrieu. Andrieu is listed in the 1821 almanac as successor to Rousseau. While there is no record of Rousseau's mark being "struck off" in the official registers, Andrieu registered his mark - which was identical to Rousseau's but with the initials "JBA" - on 7 November 1820, thus providing the date. Andrieu died in 1833 and was in turn succeeded by his widow, Marie-Louise Dutertre, as Veuve Andrieu, fl. 1833-1835; her mark was "VA" with a rose. The original pun behind many of the devices in French marks (Rousseau = rose) were often thus lost to time.

QUEILLÉ

Rue du Faubourg-Montmartre 70, later Rue des Petits-Carreaux 11, Paris

Image
Queillé - Paris - 1905

Member JayT supplied the following information:
The Queillé family were large manufacturers of silver cutlery, flatware and hollowware in Paris at various addresses throughout the nineteenth century and into the twentieth century until the 1930’s. The company passed from father to son over more than a century. Their mark was always the initials PQ on a horizontal axis with an antique oar (une rame antique) separating the initials. The appearance of their symbol (the oar) and the letters changed somewhat over time, but PQ with the oar is always the mark of this family. The first, Pierre-François Queillé, was a cutler who registered his mark in 1808. The second, also Pierre-François Queillé, probably his son, worked 1834-1846. Next came Eugène, a son of the second Pierre-François Queillé, then another Pierre-François Queillé. Sources: Arminjon, I, no. 03068, p. 302, and Allan, p. 313.

Member Zilver2 supplied the following information:
Pierre François Quiellé, 70 rue du Faubourg-Montmartre, Paris.
Active from 1834 until 1846
N° de garantie : 3380
N° de préfecture : 3527
Symbol : an antique oar
Sucessor 1 : Eugène Queillé (1847-1895)
Successor 2 : Antoine Lapparra (1895-1902)

FRANÇOIS-AUGUSTE BOYER-CALLOT - SOCIÉTÉ BOYER COLLET

Rue Sainte Croix de la Bretonnerie 30, Paris

Some examples of the work of François-Auguste Boyer-Callot:

Image

Member blakstone wrote:

François-Auguste Boyer-Callot, who registered this mark in 1865. He was the successor to Eusèbe Callot (working 1845-1865), and his company was still in business until at least the end of the 19th century as Société Boyer-Callot. (The device is actually a crowned chalice.)

A set of ice cream spoons in this exact (unnamed) pattern by Boyer-Collet is illustrated on page 110 of David Allen's French Silver Cutlery of the XIX Century. It's a beautiful book, and a must have for any collector of 19th century French flatware.

GUSTAVE KELLER

Rue de Turbigo 65, later Rue Joubert 22, later, Avenue Matignon 18, Paris

Examples of the work and marks of Gustave Keller:

A Veilleuse-Theiere*, 14cm in height:

Image

*Veilleuse (French) A utensil, consisting of several parts, for keeping warm the contents of a bowl, teapot or cup which rests on a hollow pedestal containing a godet (lamp). Originally made to be used at the bedside to keep food warm for a invalid or an infant, the veileuse was similarly used in the bedroom for keeping warm a beverage for one person. The name is derived from the verb veiller, to keep a night vigil. The characteristic feature is the bowl or teapot is made with a projecting bottom which fits into the pedestal, bringing the contents nearer to the warming flame of the godet. The Tea Warmer (veilleuse-theiere) is the only one known to have been reproduced in silver.

The Keller firm was established in 1856 by Gustave Keller and his work was soon noted for its fine quality. The business was awarded a gold and a silver medal at the 1867 and 1878 Paris World Exhibitions. After 1878 the business was styled Gustave Keller Frères and started producing silverware, which was rewarded at the 1889 and 1900 world fairs respectively, with a gold medal and a Grand Prix. In 1889.

The business was the holder of several warrants as suppliers to European courts including those of Spain, Greece, Romania and Russia (the firm was a favourite of Tsar Nicholas II) and from the 1900's they were commissioned to produce several important trophies for the Principality of Monaco.

ORFÈVRERIE BY M. GUSTAVE KELLER.
WE have in the display of M. Keller the "one thing needful," which is, of course, distinct originality in design and treatment. To say this, is high praise, in the Exhibition as elsewhere.

The forms displayed in M. Keller's pavilion are extremely decorative and simple in style, yet he has made distinct personal departures in seeking after new forms, and is to be congratulated on the real beauty of many of his works. The work here shown is really wonderful in its quiet distinction of style.

The barometer illustrated is of fine design, and the tea and coffee stand is dainty and graceful. Everywhere in the display we see taste and judgment exercised. The result is a harmonious and dignified "tout ensemble."

There are many other objects in the collection which are well worthy both of illustration and description, but those selected are typical of the work.
It can be said of this exhibit that it in no sense shows a striving after originality at the expense of the recognised limits of good taste. M. Keller shows just that reserve which is necessary to avoid extravagance and eccentricity. It would be well if there were more exhibitors who had so much discretion and judgment.

PARISOT & GALLOIS

Rue de Richelieu 101, Paris

Image

Member JayT supplied the following information:

This is the mark of Edme Parisot and Edouard Gallois, cutlers in Paris at 101 rue de Richelieu from 6 May 1865 to 6 February 1895. Their symbol was a Saint-Louis cross. See Arminjon, v.II, no. 03461, p. 314.

Edme Parisot had a long career as a cutler, succeeding Auguste-Démophile Touron (active 1820-1840), adopting his symbol of the Saint-Louis cross. Parisot registered marks in 1842, 1855, and with Gallois in 1865. Blades were made to his specifications in the Haute-Marne, and then mounted to handles in his Paris workshop.

Considered an innovator, he received bronze medals at universal expositions in 1844 and 1849, a mention in 1862, and gold in 1867.

M. MARRET

Le Havre

The Paris Police have cleverly succeeded in discovering the perpetrators of an extensive forgery in hall-marks. Complaints having been made that fraudulently marked wedding rings were being sold in different shops, an inquiry was made, the result of which showed that the rings in question were manufactured by a M. Marret, in Havre. Marret now accuses MM. Moncault, a firm of manufacturing jewelers, of having supplied him with rings of base metal for the purpose of being fraudulently stamped. The case has been taken up by the Paris Jewelers' and Goldsmiths' Syndicate.
