Jean Lucien Ferry

Born: 16 Mar 1855, Paris, 2nd arrondissement, son of Jean Emile Ferry, spur maker, and Leonie Augustine Courtois
Married: 5 May 1882, Paris, 1st arrondissement, to Jenny Buissot
Died: after 1910

He is first listed as a manufacturing silversmith in the Paris directory of 1878 at 156 rue Faubourg St. Martin, and a later listing gives that year as the foundation of his manufactory. He sold the company on 1 Nov 1893 to Armand Gross, who the day before had registered a mark - with the same winged wheel - at the Faubourg St. Martin address. (Gross had earlier been on rue du Temple). So JayT is spot-on in the dating: 1878-1893. By 1922, Olier & Caron were advertising that they had acquired the patterns and dies of Ferry and his successor Gross.

I could not find a death record for Ferry, but it was after 15 Jan 1910, when he acknowledged receipt of his medal as Chevalier of the Legion of Honor for his service as Squadron Leader of the Territorial Group of the 13th Artillery Regiment. His service records show that throughout his ownership of the silver manufactory, he was a reserve artilleryman and, after selling his shop in 1893, he served another sixteen years as Captain of the 19th and 12th and Squadron Leader of the 13th Artillery. He was living in Vincennes (in the eastern suburbs of Paris) at the time of the honor, but (as I say) I could not find any death record for him there.

HIRSCH

Rue de la Victoire, Paris

PARIS JEWEL FRAUDS

Warrants have been issued, says a Paris correspondent, for the arrest of two jewellers, the brothers Hirsch, who carried on business in the Rue de la Victoire, and are now missing. They are alleged to have pawned in London and Paris large quantities of jewellery sold to them on credit. They also disposed of the pawntickets, nearly one hundred of which have been discovered in Paris. The total value of the goods thus pawned is 3,000,000f.

In looking at Arminjon, v. I, no. 02974, p. 294, there is the mark of a buckle maker that looks like your man, Pierre-Hyacinthe Langlois. His mark was the initials PH over L with a star above and a duck over the star. Langlois started under the ancien régime in Melun on 15 July 1778, then transferred to St-Denis outside Paris in 1780. By 1803-04 he was in Paris at 64 rue St-Martin, where presumably he registered this mark, and at 57 rue du Temple in 1815. No end date is given.

Nocq, v. 3, p. 31-32, tells us more about the early life and career of Pierre-Hyacinthe Langlois. He was born in 1756 in Pontoise, and on 22 February 1769 apprenticed at age 13 to his father, Hyacinthe Langlois. Hyacinthe was himself the son and grandson of silversmiths, so Pierre-Hyacinthe came from a long line in the trade. In 1778 he registered a mark in Melun: crowned fleur de lys, two grains, PHL, a small rose. On 1 February 1780 he was authorized to move to St-Denis to take over from the silversmith J.-B. Bouton.

Your spoons were made in Paris 1809-19, of 950 standard silver, as shown by the silver standard mark of a cock facing right in an octagonal reserve with a border, and a guarantee mark of a Minerva head facing right in a circular reserve.
The maker was Pierre-Joseph Dehanne, flatware maker, working at 28 rue des Marmousets. Dehanne registered this mark in 1798-99, but he also had been a maker in pre-Revolutionary times. No end date of his activity is given, but he appeared in the Almanach Azur until 1822.

See Arminjon, v. I, no. 00871, p. 118.

During the ancien régime, Dehanne registered his mark on 21 December 1785 at the age of 34: initials PJD under a crowned fleur de lys, two grains and a cock as symbol.

See Nocq, v. II, p. 26.

The pattern is called Filet or Thread. You have a personalization of initials under the coronet of a marquis.

MAISON OSTERTAG

16 Place Vendôme, Paris

The daring of the modern jewel thief is illustrated in the latest coup in Paris in which the well-known jewelry shop of Ostertag's in the Place Vendome was entered in broad daylight and two jewelry clerks so badly injured by revolver fire that one may die. Three stylishly dressed men were concerned in the robbery. One struck the nearest clerk on the head with an iron bar. As his staff companion rushed to his aid the latter was shot in the stomach and again in the back as he spun round in his agony. Although a policeman passed the shop almost at the moment of the robbery he heard nothing suspicious. No arrests by the police have been reported so far.

The date letter “Z” here was used from 21 Feb 1788 to 23 Jan 1789 (by Dole warden Joseph Hubert). Dole was under the jurisdiction of the Besancon mint, hence that city’s mark.

There is no record of Senard's death, but a Claude-Antoine Senard, likely his brother, died in Dole on 16 May 1805, age 64.

Varin worked in Paris. He was at 22, rue des Fossés-Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois in 1816, and 12, rue des Marmousets in 1818. Therefore your objects could have been made at either address, during a fairly narrow timeframe: sometime between 1814 (date Varin mark registered) and 1819 (end date for this 800 standard silver mark).

Member JayT wrote: Your ladle was made by Pierre-Nicolas Sommé in Paris in 1788. You have Sommé’s second mark of a crowned fleur-de-lys, two grains, initials PNS, and a hand holding a bunch of laurel leaves. Sommé had a long, distinguished career. Apprenticed in 1747 to Edme-Thomas Laurent, he transferred to Eloy Guérin in 1750. He registered his first mark on 17 July 1760, and this second mark on 3 September 1768. At the time your ladle was made he was on rue St. Eloi, where he stayed until 1793. He retired to Versailles, and died in the early 19th C. Examples of Sommé’s work can be found at the Louvre Museum in Paris.

See Nocq, v. 4, p. 29.

In addition to the maker’s mark you have a date letter mark indicating 1788 under a crowned P, a charge mark of a Crowned A, in use 1783-1789, a discharge mark of the same time period, and just for fun, a small assay mark. The latter is unusual to see.

As a bonus, the pattern of your ladle is called Uniplat, and you have a personalization of initials under a coronet of a marquis(?), although your photo of the coronet is not clear.[/i]
