The sequel to the big robbery at Mappin & Webb's is that one man was discharged, two sentenced to penal servitude for 10 years and one for eight years. The men, the police stated, were implicated in the robbery of the motor trophy from Oxford Street a short time since and were colleagues of a gang of American thieves who had been about town. However, “it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good,” and the cabman who first became suspicious and warned the police has been presented with a new cab and horse by Messrs. Mappin & Webb, while the insurance company has given him £500.

FOR THE QUEEN

A MAGNIFICENT GIFT WHEN SHE VISITS SHEFFIELD

Mappin and Webb, of Sheffield and London, have just completed a magnificent casket of solid gold and a gold key, which the corporation of Sheffield will present to the Queen on her visit to the city. The value of the articles is £1,200. They are magnificent specimens of the goldsmith's art, and are lavishly embellished with heraldic emblazonry. The casket is to contain the address from the corporation to the Queen.

The Persian Minister has just had especially designed for him, a dressing and travelling bag, made of the finest crocodile stained malachite green (the sacred colour in his country), with fittings of tortoise-shell, gold and silver, and the Royal arms of Persia emblazoned upon every piece. It was made by Mappin and Webb, and it is intended for a present to the Shah in honour of his coronation.

Death of Frederick M. Learmonth

Montreal, Can., Dec. 28.—The death of Frederick M. Learmouth, director and sales manager of the jewelry firm of Mappin & Webb, Ltd., of this city, occurred today, after a long illness.

Mr. Learmouth was born at Lachine, Que., and educated at the Montreal High School. For 20 years he was engaged in customs brokerage, and after serving with Henry Birks & Sons for some time became associated with Mappin & Webb.

While prominent in business circles, he was perhaps more widely known in his younger days as an athlete, his favorite sports being lacrosse, hockey and skating. He was captain of the Montreal team that won the world's lacrosse championship in 1885 and 1886 and also belonged to the 1885 championship team of the Montreal Hockey Club. Mr. Learmouth was a member of the Board of Trade.

He is survived by his widow.

THE STRANGE RECOVERY OF A RING

Harriet Douglas, who was in the service of Mr. Mappin, silversmith, of 79, Albert Hall-mansions, as temporary parlourmaid, was, on remand, charged, at Westminster Police-court, London, yesterday with robbing her employer. Detective-sergeant Morgan said that a diamond ring, value £100, which prosecutor missed, and about which the police made inquiry, had been found tucked in the trimming of Mrs. Mappin's hat. How it got there was a mystery. There was no charge with respect to other jewellery and a silver-handled parasol also found at prisoner's house. The accused had hitherto borne a good character. She pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing cigars, &c., belonging to Mr. Mappin, and Mr. Horace Smith, warning her, bound her over in £10 to receive judgment if called upon.

Siege of Paris

MESSRS. MAPPIN AND WEBB, who have already sent several cases of goods to Paris, write to us suggesting that all Englishmen having friends, relatives, or customers in Paris, should at once purchase provisions and forward them, carefully packed, and addressed to such friends, through the care of the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway.

Headley Park, near Epsom, belonging to Mr. Newton Mappin, of Messrs. Mappin and Webb, was destroyed by fire early on Sunday morning, only the walls standing. The house keeper was burned to death. A servant girl from the same room narrowly escaped with her life. The cause of the fire is attributed to overheating from fires warming the rooms ready for a Christmas party. The value of the destroyed residence was considerable.
