JOHN HUTCHINSON
Sadler Street, Durham
An example of the work and mark of John Hutchinson:
I·H
John Hutchinson's working period is thought to be from 1767 to 1770 only. If my calculations are correct, he submitted a total 1471 oz. of silverware for assay with Newcastle Assay Office in that period.
Recorded as being the son of Jane, and the brother of George.
He married Ann Ebdon at St. Oswald's, Durham on the 4th March 1770, but died almost immediately (within one month) afterwards.
John's wife, Ann, may have continued the business, but submitted just one parcel of work for assay on the 13th April 1770 which was likely to be the last of John's work.

W. LESTER & SONS
Grey Street, Newcastle
Capture of a Shop-lifter
Recently a man entered the shop of W. Lester and Sons, Grey-street, Newcastle, and asked to see several articles of jewelry, ultimately selecting some £40 worth. He then left, ostensibly to get a cheque changed ; but the assistant was rather suspicious of his man, and sent a lad to follow him. He was seen to enter a pawnbroker's, and the boy returned to "report progress." By this time the assistant had discovered the theft of a gold albert, and therefore quickly hied to Uncle's. He found that the albeit had just been pledged, and that the thief had departed with the money, but not so far as to be lost. The police soon had him back to the shop, and although he succeeded in bolting, he was ultimately brought to justice and sentenced to six months' hard labor.

THE NEWCASTLE HANDICRAFTS COMPANY
37, Orchard Street, and College Road, Barras Bridge, Newcastle upon Tyne
An example of the work of The Newcastle Handicrafts Company, an Arts & Crafts silver bowl with a swing handle, chased foot and hammered finish. The handle being attached with strap-work brackets. The bowl is 5¾" (14.5cm) in width, 5" (13cm) in height (including handle) and weighs 256 grams. It was assayed at Birmingham in 1908:
The Newcastle Handicrafts Company was established in 1899 by Richard George Hatton (1864-1926) and Charles W. Mitchell (1854-1903) in an effort to give the students a chance to execute work in silver and other materials from Hatton's designs.
The First Annual Exhibition of the Northumberland Handicrafts Guild
Among local associations, the exhibit of the Newcastle Handicrafts Company call for particular mention. It included several beautiful examples of embroidery, enamelling, bronze and silver work, and cabinet-making. The fruit bowl, in silver and enamels, an illustration of which is here given, stands 5 inches high, and is 8¾ inches in diameter. Around the lip is a broad wire upon which mouldings are turned. Similar mouldings enrich the base, which bears four plaques of cloisonné enamel. Between the plaques are alternately moonstones and labradorites, the colours harmonising delicately with the silver. Another important work of the Handicrafts Company is the Volunteer Challenge Shield in bronze overlaid with copper. The inscription, and most of the ornament, is embossed. In the upper part is a representation of St. George and the Dragon, with the motto of the Northumberland Fusiliers, “Quo fata vocant.” On either side, in cloisonné enamel, are the red and white roses side by side, as worn by the Fusiliers on St. George's Day. Above, also enamelled, is the flaming fusil, the badge of that famous regiment.
