The Gorham Manufacturing Co., whose works are now located in North Main street, commenced to build their new works at Elmwood on July 25, by breaking ground for their new factory, the main building of which will be about 450 feet in length, three stories high, with wings and extensions. The building will be constructed of brick, with granite facings on corners and trimmings of same. The foundations will be rushed along as fast as convenient to make them entirely first-class, as no pains will be spared in the construction of any part of this immense structure, and when finished during the coming spring or summer will present a very solid and substantial appearance and an ornament to the city.

The Gorham Mfg. Co., of Providence, R. I., recently completed the most elaborate silver dinner service ever made in this country. Its value is $120,000. The service consists of 900 pieces of silver with a gold lining. It was made for former Senator Clark of Montana, the so-called "Copper King" and will be used in his new $7,000,000 house on Fifth Ave., New York City.

The Gorham Mfg. Co. sell their Old Factory

Providence, R. I., May, 27.—The Gorham Mfg. Co. have sold the estate that was occupied by them for upwards of half a century on N. Main and Steeple Sts. The transaction is an interesting one, as shown by the following records taken from the books at City Hall, in the order recorded :

“ Gorham Manufacturing Company deeded to Walter E. Burton estate on North Main and Steeple streets.

“ Gorham Manufacturing: Company gave bill of sale to Walter E. Burton of buildings on leased land south of above estate.

“ Walter E. Burton mortgaged the whole of above to Edward Holbrook, of New York, vice-president of Gorham Manufacturing Company, for $75,000.

“ Walter E. Burton sold same to Samuel R. Knights, of Boston.

“Samuel R. Knights filed a Declaration of Trust, stating that he holds said estate in trust for George Fogarty, of Cambridge, Mass., John S. Lynch, of Providence, and Edward Frothingham, of Boston.”

There is a probability that the large silver statue of Christopher Columbus which was cast by the Gorham Mfg. Co. and which forms a conspicuous attraction in their Columbian exhibit will ultimately be located in the Capitol at Washington, D. C.

Silverware Stocks Co. Merged With the Silversmiths Co. and Directors Elected

At the meeting held last Thursday in New York, the Silversmiths Co. and the Silverware Stocks Co. were united and will be known after this as the Silversmiths Co. The following directors were elected: Edward Holbrook, H. J. Wells, R. C. Hotson, John S. Holbrook, H. A. Bliss, George Carlton Comstock, William H. Randel, Leslie R. Palmer, Henry Caplan. These directors are to meet shortly for the purpose of electing the permanent officers. Of the 20,000 shares of stock of the Silversmiths Co., 14,800 were represented at the meeting, and the vote in favor of the merging was unanimous.

The charter of the Silversmiths Co. is broad, providing facilities that were deemed desirable for the purposes in view. The amount of the capital stock issued is $2,000,000, and not $14,000,000, as was erroneously reported in several of the daily papers. The company is authorized to issue
capital stock to the extent of $14,000,000, but no decision has yet been reached as to issuing any additional stock. As the result of the action taken on Thursday, several affiliated silverware companies passed to the financial control of the Silversmiths Co., according to the plans outlined some time ago by Edward Holbrook, the president of the Gorham Mfg. Co. The latter company is now left free and independent in its management, it is explained, in accordance with the original purpose.

The affiliated companies, whose financial control will be centered in the Silversmiths Co. are also each to continue its business under its individual, separate management so that there will be no change in the relations of any of these companies with the trade. From the beginning it has been emphasized that the object of the various transactions is not to combine the companies into one business, but rather to place them upon a basis such that each may develop along its own lines.

Dinner Given to John F. P. Lawton in Honor of His 50th Anniversary With the Gorham Co.

Providence, R. I., Aug. 9.—John F. PLawton, secretary and assistant treasurer of the Gorham Mfg. Co., completed a half-century’s service with that corporation today, and in observance of the event Mr. Lawton's associates in the concern arranged a dinner in his honor at the Hope Club in the evening. The employes of the Gorham Co., at noon to-day, paid their tribute to the veteran official, a long line of workmen, numbering 1,807, saluting him as they filed past on their way from the works. This evidence of regard touched the recipient deeply.

At the dinner this evening there were present, to extend their congratulations, Edward Holbrook. New York, president of the Gorham Co.; John S. Holbrook, vice-president; E. J. Dingee and W. N. La Cato, of the New York office; E. Frank Aldrich, Henry S. Sprague, William C. Codman, William Codman and William E. Keyes, of this city, officers and directors of the company. An engrossed testimonial upon parchment was presented to Mr. Lawton at the conclusion of the dinner in commemoration of his 50 years’ connection with the company.

Mr. Lawton entered the employ of the company in 1859. He was first employed as bookkeeper. In 1865 he acquired an interest in the company and became its secretary, which office he has held ever since. Mr. Lawton passed his 70th birthday two years ago, at which time there was a material appreciation of the event shown by the company.

SAN FRANCISCO

Among the last of the large wholesale firms of the city to locate in permanent quarters in the down-town district is the Gorham Co., which has moved over from Oakland and now occupies an entire floor in the attractive fireproof building at 140 Geary St. Immediately after the fire the concern secured quarters in a prominent location in Oakland, over a bank. A large stock was carried there and business carried on just as formerly. The city trade was supplied as expeditiously as though a location had been secured in San Francisco and daily deliveries have been made since then. The new location on Geary St. could scarcely be improved on, as it is easily reached both by city and out-of-town customers. Building operations have been completed in this vicinity and the surrounding structures are of high-class construction. The Gorham Co. occupies the entire seventh floor of the building and has fitted it up at large expense. A marble wainscotting has been placed in the hallway and the entrance has been further improved. The largest stock of silverware ever carried on the coast is now being shown and the new wall cases, brought out from New York, have been put in place. The lighting facilities are one of the most prominent features of the establishment, there being light from all four sides. The buildings on either side are less than seven stories in height, so that no light is shut out. The shipping room is located in the rear and is reached by a freight elevator. Special fire protection apparatus has been installed.
