The Gorham M’f’g Co. had on exhibition last month at their main-office, Broadway and 19th Street, New York, a magnificent banquet service, made for the Auditorium Hotel, of Chicago. The service consists of a centre piece, together with four large fruit dishes, and twelve smaller compotiers. The centre piece, five feet five inches long, and three feet, five inches high, is an original design embracing a happy combination of the styles of the First Empire with the Louis XVI. The vase, intended to hold growing ferns, is an oval broken by two circles in outline, and is in open relief work supported by six beautiful modelled and chased figures—three mermaids and three mermen. In the centre of the base is a dome, on which stands a very beautiful jardiniere for the flowers. From the centre of this dish arises a graceful female figure, completing what may be considered a perfect masterpiece. The four fruit dishes and twelve compotiers are in harmony with the centre piece, both in design and finish, and the whole service as it stands is undoubtedly the most elaborate, complete and elegant ever made for the purpose. This banquetting set is in addition to the very large regular table service now in use by the hotel made for them by the Gorham M’f’g Co., which is of a unique and entirely exclusive design.

The Gorham Bicycle Club, composed entirely of employes of the Gorham Mfg. Co., have arranged for a series of bicycle races to take place at Berkely Oval, Saturday, June 4. Six events are scheduled, one of them being an Invitation race, in which any member of the jewelry and silversmithing trades is invited to participate. The other races will be confined to members of the club. A band will be kept busy during and between the races, and an interesting time is anticipated.

George W. H. Allen, the oldest engine turner in this city and for many years well known to the manufacturing jewelers, died last week at his home in Auburn, R. I. He was born in 1842 and served with great distinction during the Civil War. After four years’ service he returned and in 1865 entered the employ of the Gorham Mfg. Co. He was also employed for about six years at the American Waltham Watch factory.

NEW YORK

Police headquarters was notified Saturday by telephone that two men had offered to pawn at Simpson’s silverware made by the Gorham Mfg. Co., which the police were attempting to trace. The goods had been sold by the Gorham Mfg. Co. to W. F. Elliot, of Baltimore, from whom they had been stolen. A detective went to Simpson’s and arrested Bernhard Blumenthal and James Vogel. When arraigned Vogel claimed that he had accompanied Blumenthal without knowing anything about the silver. Blumenthal claimed that he had bought it. The two were remanded in the custody of counsel.

Very conspicuous at this time in the casting room of the Gorham Mfg. Co. is an 8-foot high angel figure, very excellent in proportion and detail, splendidly devised and worked out, which is to be one of the group of four figures being cast for a mausoleum. The colossal equestrian statue of Gen. Hancock for the City of Washington lies around the casting room in portions, but will very soon be completed.

NEW YORK

The beautiful jeweled crucifix lately presented to Trinity Church by Miss Adele Kneeland and her sister, Mrs H. W. Munroe, as a memorial to their mother, was made by the Gorham Mfg. Co. This crucifix has now displaced the cross which has for years been carried in the procession in this church.

The Cruiser “Minneapolis” to Receive a Silver Service

Minneapolis, Minn., Jan. 3.—The cruiser Minneapolis is to receive from the city, a fitting and appropriate gift—a gift worthy of the city and her swift namesake. The executive committee of the cruiser ball met Dec. 29 to sum up results. The committee consists of Mayor Eustis, C. McC. Reeve, J. F. Conklin, Lucian Swift and George B. Eustis.

After looking over the finances they decided that they were warranted in ordering a $5,000 silver service. It was further decided to order the service of the Gorham Mfg. Co., Chicago, through Eustis Bros., of this city. The designs for the service have already been prepared, and will produce a service ornate in the extreme. There is a suggestion in them of Minneapolis, industry and energy, and the largest piece will have a representation of Minnehaha falls, which are every where indentified with Minneapolis. It will be a 10-piece silver service. The most prominent piece is a tureen and stand of massive design and superior workmanship. It will be surmounted by a cover of uniform design. There will also be two large vegetable dishes, with covers ; two gravy dishes, an 18 inch meat dish and another somewhat larger.

The whole will constitute a service as fine as any which has been given to any of the white squadron, so that Minneapolis may feel that she has done as well by the namesake as any of her competitors for the honor of a name. As the designs are in hand, it will not be long before the service is ready for presentation.

Joseph M. Bolton, who was indicted some time ago on the charge of stealing from the Gorham Manufacturing Co., was released last week on $2,500 bail, furnished by W. J. Cromwell, of 203 East Sixty-ninth street, Mr. Cromwell swore that he owned the house, 226 East Twelfth street, in fee and his equity in it was worth $100,000, there being a mortgage on it for that amount. Investigation, however, showed that he had inherited the property from his father, and only a life estate, and practically no fee interest in it. An indictment on the charge of perjury was found against him and he was arrested on Saturday. Judge Martine fixed his bail at $5,000.

The Gorham Mfg. Co. Robbed of Silver Stock

Providence, R. I., Aug. 23.—Detective Parker this week, at the works of the Gorham Mfg. Co., arrested a silversmith, William Weidman, on charges of stealing silver from one of the departments in which he was employed. The man has been employed at the works for seven years or so, having come to this country to do fine work for the company. How much stuff has been taken by the man is not known.

A few months ago a new system of keeping track of the metal at the works was put into operation. The old method worked well, but under the new system it was found that those who were so inclined could take scraps of silver and defy detection. Within a few weeks considerable metal has been missed, but where it has gone or how much it amounts to in value is not known even to the officers of the works. But a large amount is said to have been carried away.

In the Sixth District Court Weidman was arraigned before Judge Sweetland and pleaded guilty. He was held in $300 for appearance before the Grand Jury.

CHICAGO

Mr. Edward Holbrook, the treasurer, and in fact the managing head of the Gorham Manufacturing Company, has just finished a four or five days’ visit to the Chicago warerooms. In conversation with your Observer Mr. Holbrook expressed himself as feeling more than satisfied with the past year’s business at this end of the line, and he did not seem sorry at finding scarce any goods in the Chicago storehouse. However much Mr. Holbrook may appreciate his own wares, as indeed who does not, it must have been a matter of honest pride to find that the demand of the western trade had robbed the Chicago house of the great stock which it held in the early winter. Manager Prentice, in speaking of the visit of his principal, said a quantity of new patterns would be on the way soon after Mr. Holbrook’s return east. Prominent among these new things, photographs of which were shown The Circular’s representative, are novel ideas in flat ware, and especially new designs in ice-water pitchers.

The Gorham Manufacturing Co.’s extensive new factory in Providence is very near completion, and contracts have already been made with the Edison Electric Light Co. for an electric plant of 2,600 incandescent lights. There will be no other means whatsoever of lighting the factory.
