Last Saturday evening about 40 of the associates of Lester F. Morse, in the cost and accounting departments of the Gorham Mfg. Co. office, tendered him a "stag" dinner at the Gorham Casino. Albert Carigan acted as toastmaster and presented to Mr. Morse a leather traveling bag. The evening was spent with informal speeches and music. Mr. Morse is about to join the ranks of the benedicts, hence the "farewell."

NOW THE 7 PER CENT. INVESTMENT BOND.

Gorham Co. Issues $3,000,000 Secured by First Mortgage

A Good Record

The war has brought out a 7 per cent. investment bond, in the shape of a $3,000,000 serial first mortgage issue by the Gorham Manufacturing Co., the big silversmith company which is credited with being the largest manufacturer of sterling silverware in the world. The bonds are to be retired serially, from 1919 to 1924, inclusive. They are being offered at par and interest. A Boston and Providence syndicate has purchased and is offering the bonds. The 7 per cent. issue will be secured by a first mortgage that is closed, on all the real estate, machinery and equipment of the company, including the large plants in Providence, the Fifth Avenue store building in New York and the branch plant in East Providence. It is stated that the net assets of the company, after deducting more than $1,500,000 depreciation reserve, was $10,500,000 on Dec. 31 last. For the last two years the company has been filling large orders for munitions, for which it has $9,500,000 orders from the United States Government. The contracts have involved a large investment in raw materials which will be liquidated as the contracts are filled. The proceeds of the present issue of bonds places the company in a position to carry out the contracts expeditiously. The Gorham Manufacturing Co. has paid 6 per cent. dividends regularly on its preferred stock ever since it was first issued 24 years ago. The common stock, which is owned by the Silversmiths Co., has never failed to pay a dividend since 1881 and it now pays 10 per cent. The offering of these bonds indicates that there is a good demand for attractive investments of this sort when they combine the two features of safety and high income yield.

George S. Rice is temporarily in charge of the Chicago branch of the Gorham Mfg. Co. Mr. Rice states that the arrangement is not permanent, as he is bound too closely to the east by home ties. A successor to the late E. W. Prentiss will likely be chosen from the rank and file of the Gorham forces. Mr. Rice will remain in Chicago but a few weeks.

In the Supreme Court, special term, Wednesday, Justice Patterson reserved decision in the suit brought by Mrs. Lillie J. Earle, wife of Gen. Ferdinand P. Earle, to recover damages from the Gorham Mfg. Co. for alleged wrongful seizure of silverware in the Hotel New Netherlands. In 1894 Earle bought $35,000 of silver from the Gorham Co., giving notes for that amount. The first note for $2,100 fell due April 5, 1894, but was not paid until April 23d, and the company then advertised the silver for sale. Gen. Earle claimed that the acceptance of the money for the note was a waiver on the part of the company. Justice Patterson enjoined the sale, and now Mrs. Earle sues to get possession of the silver and to recover damages.

Judge Patterson, of the Supreme Court, Friday handed down his decision in the suit brought by Mrs. Lillie J. Earle, wife of Gen. Ferdinand P. Earle, to recover damages from the Gorham Mfg. Co. for alleged wrongful seizure of silverware in the Hotel New Netherlands. As told in The Circular last week Earle bought $35,000 of silver from the Gorham Co. in 1894, giving notes for the amount. The first note for $2,100 fell due April 5, 1894, but was not paid until April 23, and the company then advertised the silver for sale. Justice Patterson enjoined the sale, and Mrs. Earle sued to get possession of the silver and to recover damages. Judge Patterson in his decision finds the plaintiff entitled to the relief of a permanent injunction, but says that Mrs. Earle failed to prove any actual damage from the acts of the Gorham Mfg. Co., and concludes by saying: “ There will be a decree, therefore, for a perpetual injunction restraining a sale on the default in payment of the note mentioned in the complaint and for costs, and an extra allowance $500, but nothing further.”

Dr. P. J. McGowan, the Surgeon of the “ Yankee,” Honored

On Thanksgiving Eve a number of physicians of New York gathered in the banquet-hall of the Hotel Logerot to honor their comrade, recently returned from his cruise with the Naval Reserves in Cuban waters. He was presented with an exquisite piece of silversmith’s art, a cup designed and made by the Gorham Silver Company. Many speeches were made during the evening, but especially noteworthy was the scholarly address of Dr. John Aspell.
