There has been on exhibition during the past week at the Fifth Ave. store of the Gorham Co., the Henry Hudson historical window which is to be placed in the New York Historical building when it is completed. The window represents Henry Hudson discovering Manhattan Island, on Sept. 11, 1609, and shows the historic ship Halfmoon at anchor, surrounded by Indian canoes with the green hills of New Jersey in the background. An afternoon scene is depicted showing the descending sun casting its rays on the ship’s rigging and upon the surrounding landscape. The window is 14 feet high by 5 feet wide, and is a gift of the Holland Dames of New York to the Historical Society. It was designed by Frank Ready.

LaPierre Mfg. Co. Must Not Make This Design

A decree was entered Saturday morning in the United States Circuit Court, at New York, in the action mentioned some time ago brought by the Gorham Mfg. Co. against the LaPierre Mfg. Co. The suit is over an alleged infringement by the defendants of a design for brush backs patented
by W. C. Codman and assigned by him to the Gorham Mfg .Co. The LaPierre Mfg. Co. did not appear and made no defence to the suit, so the decree was entered by default.

By this decree, which is signed by Judge Lacomhe, the Gorham Mfg. Co. are adjudged to he the sole and exclusive owners of the design in question, and W. C. Codman to have been the first and original inventor and producer of the said design. The defendant company are adjudged to have infringed the patents by manufacturing brushes with a similar design, and a perpetual injunction is granted against them restraining either the LaPierre Mfg. Co., their agents or their employes from directly or indirectly making any brush hacks or similar articles ornamented with the design in question. They are also restrained from using any design embodying the features of that covered by the patent or so closely resembling it as to induce purchasers to believe they were obtaining the original design owned by the Gorham Mfg. Co. Nothing about costs or damages is mentioned in the decree.

The Gorham Manufacturing Company has resumed full operations after the annual summer shut down, and every department is now in full swing. The company has on hand several of the largest orders that it has ever been called upon to fill. These include the silver services for three of the Government battleships, the large silverware service for the new Vanderbilt hotel in New York, as well as some notable bronze work. The company now has more than 2,500 employees upon its payrolls.

HIGHEST AWARD FOR SILVERWARE

The awards in connection with the International Exposition of Decorative Art at Turin have just been made public. From these it appears that the Gorham Company, of New York, has received a gold medal, or the highest award, for its silverware. It is said to be the only American firm of silversmiths which has received recognition at the judges' hands, a result the more gratifying to local pride, in view of the fact that the leading artist-craftsmen of England, France, Germany, Austria and Italy, as well as of the United States, vied with each other in this artistic rivalry.

Last Wednesday there was a destructive fire in property owned by the Gorham Manufacturing Company at Mashapag pond, near the works of the company, the ice houses of Earl Carpenter & Sons being totally destroyed. The buildings were owned by the Gorham company and leased to the Carpenter concern. A cottage house, owned by the company, and a barn were also destroyed, but the whole loss is covered by insurance. The ice houses will not be rebuilt, as the company intends to use the land for lawn purposes, thus enhancing in a great measure the beauty of the grounds around the works.
