ONEIDA COMMUNITY Ltd.

One of the most handsome and well visited displays at the convention was that of the Oneida Community, Ltd., of Oneida, N. Y. The company had a large space in the southwestern corner of the mezzanine floor of the Hotel Sherman. At the booth were G. Wayland-Smith, Mrs. F. H. Primo, W. T. Earl, O. E. Cummings, R. W. Bolls, C. N. Woolworth and E. C. Moore. The company featured chest silver, also individual fancy pieces in velvet boxes. Child sets were prominent in the display. The company had two showcases, one of them adorned with a changing electric sign, presenting different pictures of Oneida silverware, according to the angle from which viewed. Many jewelers visited the booth during the course of the convention, and the company booked a number of substantial orders.

This Jeweler Believes in Political Signs

This is no presidential press agent's story, so don't misjudge, gentle reader. Only the story of an enterprising jeweler of Newark. N.J.

It will be noticed that the sign urging the nomination of the California senator is very large and conspicuous. Frank Holt & Co. thought that it would be well to link up with it, in other words, to get next to it with another sign. And you can hardly read one sign without reading the other. See the point? Hence originated their timely sign under H. W. J.'s business card:

MAY STAY-BUT !!!

Every one can draw his own conclusion from that sign,—both the "Sanes" and the "Andersanes." But at any rate, the description under this tells the real story, that even though it does stay. Holt's will move May 1 to the next corner and before doing so will conduct a 15% reduction sale.

MASSIVE SILVERWARE PRESS EXHIBITED AT ST. LOUIS IN 1904


An image of the massive press for embossing silverware exhibited at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis in 1904:



The giant press, made by Krupp, 21 feet in height and capable of producing a hydraulic pressure of 85,000 pounds to the square inch. The frame was made up of eight Siemens-Martin open-hearth steel yokes, the legs of which are 3 inches in thickness by 12 inches in width. each yoke weighing 4 tons.

The purpose of the press was to produce by a quick and cheap method the finest forms of embossed silverware, chiefly in the way of flagons, vases. urns, etc.

PRESIDENTIAL CHAIN OF OFFICE - BIRMINGHAM CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Presidential Chain of Office

PENDANT.—The Pendant is massive, and of built-up construction. The centre portion of the Pendant is occupied by the reproduction in enamel of the Seal of the Chamber, surrounded by a laurel wreath confined with ribbons. The enamelled panel in the upper portion of the pendant displays symbols of Learning, Wisdom, and Industry in its various branches as carried out in the City and district. A similar but smaller panel in the lower portion of the pendant bears the figure of "Justice", together with a Cornucopia symbolic of prosperity. The pendant is made to be detachable from the body of the chain, and can be worn separately on a special ribbon collar when required.

The reverse side bears the following inscription : — “ Presented to the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce (Incorporated) by J. S. Taylor, Esq., Chairman 1904-5 to 1909-1910; President 1910-1911

CHAIN.—The body of the chain consists of 24 links, making up the approximate length of 42 inches. The centre link bears the word" President ” in enamel, surrounded by a laurel wreath. On either side of the centre link are small links in which are embodied an Axe, typifying authority. The remaining links are all shield design, surrounded by scroll work. These shield links are suitable for engraving the names of retiring Presidents.

The chain is made of 15 carat gold, and is of substantial weight. Two cases are being supplied, one for the whole of the chain complete with pendant, and a smaller one to take the pendant and its ribbon collar alone.

The whole of the work in connection with the chain has been carried out at the Albion Street Works of Joseph Fray, Limited, goldsmiths and silversmiths of this City.
