SILVER REPRODUCTIONS AT THE HOUSE OF PHILIP ORIEL

There may not be anything new in a pair of heavy silver candlesticks, but this particular pair happens to be so beautiful that they compel attention. They are exact reproductions of a pair made by Paul Lamerie in 1719, the originals of which are safely tucked away in a British museum. Standing 10½ inches, graceful yet massive, they are wrought with all the perfection of detail in line and design which characterize that great Silversmith.

The same firm, which specializes in every sort of beautiful and well made reproduction, has also on view several replicas of Jacobean vases. The most interesting feature is, that the pattern is not engraved but dovetailed with fine care. In outline they are extremely simple, with the graceful, conventionalized floral pattern of the design repeated in a still more conventionalized border at the base.

Arthur Stannard Vernay founded the antiques business that bore his name. He was born ca. 1877 in Weymouth, England, and rumor has it that Vernay may not have been his surname at birth, but that he adopted it at a later date. He came to New York City as a young man with very little money. After working at A.J. Crawford’s, a furniture and furnishing store, Vernay began to deal in antiques, and opened his own shop in 1906 on 45th Street, just off Fifth Avenue. He sold English antiques almost exclusively. In addition to selling antiques, Vernay’s firm offered restoration and interior design services, including the installation of period paneled rooms. This was an important part of the business, employing up to forty people. Mr. Vernay’s first important client was Mrs. Morton Plant. He also worked with attorney Francis P. Garvan and financier James Cox Brady. Vernay, Inc. offered interior work until the late1960s. At various times, the firm had branches in London and Boston, and a summer shop in Newport, Rhode Island. For a brief while, it had a reproduction arm called The House of Philip Oriel, but it went out of business as a result of the Great Depression.

The Thirty-third Annual Exhibition of the Architectural League of New York

Some of the finest wrought hardware was exhibited by Samuel Yellin and by Arthur Todhunter, and possibilities in metal-work in the execution of lamp-stands, brackets and the like were excellently realised in the examples shown by Heath and Kantack. As in former exhibitions, well-studied projects in stained glass bore the names of Maitland Armstrong and Nicola d’Ascenzo, and several fine bits were contributed by C.H. Davis and J. Stark Melville, of The House Of Philip Oriel.
