M. S. Benedict Talks to Syracuse Citizens Regarding Trouble with Employes

Syracuse, N. Y., May 19.—The village board and most of the business men interviewed M. S. Benedict, of the M. S. Benedict Mfg. Co., East Syracuse, yesterday, in regard to the trouble that arose a few days ago because of the employes forming a union.

Mr. Benedict said he would take back the men if they would disband the union and sign a contract for five years, he promising not to make them work by piece work, which was one thing that started the trouble. He said he did not care if they formed unions among themselves, but he would not run a union shop.

The Benedict Mfg. Co. has called in its 22 salesmen for the year because the company’s output has been sold and orders already received can only be filled by the company running night and day until Jan. 1. It has 350 operators. “The company has advertised all over for help, and with slim results,” said President Harry L. Benedict. “It shows prosperity. I am confident of good business for several years to come.” The company will probably build another factory next year. A dinner was given at the Yates for C. C. Graham, sales manager, who sails this week on a trip around the world for the Benedict company.

"Assyrian Gold," a new and original line of gold plated novelities that bids fair to become the most popular line selling on the market is now being produced by the Benedict Manufacturing Company. Inspired by the decorative arts of ancient Assyria, each piece possesses some characteristic and potent symbol of ancient gems, such as the scrabi, in carved jade, lapis lazuli and various other stones of harmonious coloring, thus adding a touch of individuality and unusual interest to each design. Wherever shown, Assyrian Gold has been generally conceded to be by far the most original and strikingly beautiful effect ever produced in any line of novelties placed on the market in years.

By a vote taken at the silverware works of he M. S. Benedict Mfg. Co., East Syracuse, the other day, it was shown that 80 per cent of the voting employes are for McKinley and sound money. At noon the employes were given a plain envelope and two cards, on which were printed the names of the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees, with instructions to destroy one card and place the other in the envelope and deposit it through a slot in a sealed box when leaving the factory at night. In this way every employe in all of the departments was afforded an opportunity to express his choice for President by secret ballot without any constraint whatever, and the result was as stated above.

Benedict-Clarke Silver Co. Operating the Ottawa, Ill., Plant

Ottawa, Ill., March 20.—The plant of the former Ottawa Silver Co., which was sold by receiver W. W. Nash, on March 10, will be operated at once by the Benedict-Clarke Silver Co. [Mention of the sale was made in The Circular-Weekly of March 20.] The successful bid was $3,000, which included the assets of the defunct company, consisting of manufactured goods, office and factory fixtures, tools, raw material and supplies, etc., but not the real estate and machinery, which belonged to the Ottawa Development Association. The association and the new company readily came to an understanding on this point, the association selling the property mentioned for $5,000.

The new company are composed of M. S. Benedict and H. L. Benedict, of the M. S. Benedict Mfg. Co., East Syracuse, N.Y., Toronto and Chicago, and E. G. Clarke and L. McGlashan, of the Ontario Silver Co., Muncie, Ind., and Niagara Falls. Fred. K. Stickle, of Syracuse, will be secretary and
treasurer of the new company and D. J. Toothill will be manufacturing manager. Incorporation papers have been filed. To D. J. Toothill is due the credit of uniting these silver ware interests in Ottawa. The factory has already begun operations and it is understood arrangements have been made whereby the M. S. Benedict Mfg. Co. will take the entire output of the Ottawa factory. One addition to the novelty department now being planned is a full line of gold clocks and other specialties of a kindred nature which will be manufactured on a large scale.

The Benedict-Clarke Silver Co. were incorporated at Springfield, Ill., yesterday, with a capital stock of $60,000, paid up. The incorporators are Henry Mayo, Fred. K. Stickle and Vincent J. Duncan.

An appeal to the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has been taken from the judgment of $6,000 obtained by Frederick Miller against the M. S. Benedict Mfg. Co., for the loss of a portion of his right hand while operating a metal rolling machine in that company’s factory. The Fidelity and Casualty Co. are the actual defendants in the case.

The patent granted to the late Wm. A. Warner for metallizing and plating roses and other flowers, has been sold by his estate to the Benedict Mfg. Co., of East Syracuse, N. Y. The claims of this patent are for the use of an artificial calyx on the flower, and the process of burning out the interior after electroplating so as to prevent spotting-out. It is reported that the price paid was $1,000, with a royalty on the sales.
