The case of Reed & Barton against Thomas F. Ashe and others was placed on trial before Justice Dunwell in Trial Term Wednesday. The action is brought to recover $.531 balance on account. Some time ago Ashe moved for the appointment of a receiver for the business, but the Smythe brothers bought him out. The debt to the plaintiffs was contracted before this time, but Ashe claims that he should not be compeled to pay the debt, as the Smythes assumed it when he sold out. The court directed Ashe to pay Reed & Barton $35.08.

The downtown branch of Reed & Barton is now located at 8 Maiden Lane, where it will remain during the rebuilding of their former quarters, 13 Maiden Lane. The new store is light and capacious and attractively furnished. The firm's new productions in sterling silver and sterling silver mounted cut glass, suitable for wedding gifts, contest prizes, etc., are now there exhibited. Reed & Barton's Chicago salesrooms have also been moved from 34 Washington St. to 103 State St.

There was on exhibition last week in Reed & Barton’s artistic down town New York showrooms, a beautiful example of chased work in the shape of a mirror. Its frame, finished in the gray tint now very popular, was perhaps the finest piece of work of its kind ever produced by this house. Flowers and scrolls formed the foundation of the decorative scheme.

A novelty of this season is the infant spoon which Reed & Barton, 13 Maiden Lane, New York, and Taunton, Mass., have just put on the market. It is a practical spoon for young children and possesses many advantages which will be appreciated particularly by mothers in teaching babies to feed themselves. The handle is bent into a loop, giving the child a firm hold on the spoon and also preventing it from slipping through the fingers. This shape also permits the spoon to be laid down without danger of upsetting the bowl. The bowl is less oval and slightly smaller than the tea spoon. The infant spoon has been patented by its manufacturers and is made by them in sterling silver in the bright and gilt and enamel finishes.

A Thief Disguised as a Messenger

Henry Purcell, nineteen years old, who has already served several terms on the Island, and who claims that he lives at No. 113 Manhattan avenue, Greenpoint, was arrested by Detective Sergeants O’Connor and Slausen, of the Central Office, on Feb. 1, with a lot of silverware in his possession, which it is charged he had stolen from Messrs. Reed, Barton & Co., No. 37 Union Square. It was also charged that he had robbed Messrs. Tiffany& Co. of S20 worth of silverware, the Meriden Company, Wallace & Co., and the Gorham Manufacturing Company. The police say that Purcell goes into the stores as a messenger boy and walks around. Having the uniform on no one takes particular notice of him, believing that he is on an errand. A complaint of stealing S40 worth of spoons from Reed, Barton & Co. was made against the prisoner, and he was held in the Jefferson Market Court, in $1,000 for trial.

The Reed & Barton Co. has instituted suit against Thomas H. Lyman, a local caterer, to recover $1,000. This is a suit for the alleged trover and conversion of a quantity of silverware, and the dispute is an old one.

By this week the corporation of Reed & Barton, Taunton, hopes to finish a large task it recently undertook. It purchased a very valuable water privilege situated several miles lower than its present works on Mill river, set up an electrical generating plant, and will send back the power there made to its present plant by wires, doubling its light and power facilities, and using the same water twice for its purposes.

Reed & Barton, Taunton, Mass., have just completed a trophy upon the order of the publishers of the Standard Union, of Brooklyn, N.Y., who awarded it to the Crescent Athletic Club, victors in the series of games played by the Inter-Club Whist League. The trophy is in the shape of a handsome sterling silver cup. Its unique feature is a representation of the winning team, transferred by a secret process to its surface. The photograph gives speaking likenesses of E. W. Bigelow, Charles E. Bigelow, Frederick S. Parker and Harry W. Beecher, seated around a table at whist, and Howard Horton, scorer, standing over them. The piece shows fine workmanship throughout, and is a highly commendable example of silversmithing.

Beautiful Silver Loving Cup Presented to Oscar Hammerstein

Saturday night at the evening performance at the Manhattan Grand Opera House, New York, the beautiful silver loving cup illustrated herewith was presented to Oscar Hammerstein by the members of the Manhattan Grand Opera Co.

Image

The cup is a clever production of the silversmith’s art, and reflects much credit on its makers, Reed & Barton, Taunton and New York. It is gracefully shaped and embellished with artistic applied decoration. The base has a scolloped effect, and rising from this are the figures of two mermaids on opposite sides, holding in outstretched hands daintily wrought wreaths of laurel. The figures join the body of the loving cup near the top, thus forming the two handles.

On one side is an artistic shield representing music, and about the shield is a garland. The shield shows two female figures, before whom is a cherub, half kneeling. In the background is the Manhattan Grand Opera House. The shield is suggestive of music. It was made by G. Fiaccarini.

On the opposite side is the following inscription - "To our beloved impresario, Oscar Hammerstein, a token of sincere appreciation of his splendid services in the cause of art and his constant sympathetic interest in his artists. From the members of the Manhattan Grand Opera Co., season of 1907-8. New York, March 28, 1908.”
