Frank Mauser & Co., silversmiths, of North Attleboro, Mass., have admitted into their firm Mr. Harvey Richards Franklin, a young man recently graduated from Yale. Mr. Franklin will travel for the firm, covering New York city and the east. Their other travelers are Mr. P. J. McArdle, covering the southern and part of the western territory, and Mr. P. H. Bettman, covering the remainder of the west and all of the northwest. This firm manufactures a general line of novelties in silver, comprising fine toilet goods, stationery, novelties, etc. They produce a peculiarly fine finish upon their goods, which are shown in many unique and original designs.

Frank O. Coombs, one of the best known engravers in the Attleboros, suffered a serious and painful injury recently while descending a flight of stairs at his home on Park St. In some manner, he lost his balance and fell headlong the entire distance to the floor below, fracturing his left arm and dislocating his shoulder. He will be laid up for a good many weeks, and his detention from business will be keenly regretted by those who depend upon his exceptional skill. His work on souvenir spoons is known throughout the country.

The Mauser Mfg. Co. are making a handsome special loving cup, which will be presented to E. Fales Coward, late dramatic editor of the New York World, by his former associates on that paper.

DEATH PUZZLES CORONER
Newark Silversmith Left Note Saying He Feared Insanity
Under peculiar circumstances, Frank Mauser, sixty-three years old, formerly head of the Mauser Silverware Company, of Newark, died suddenly last night in the Frank E. Campbell undertaking establishment, at No. 241 West 23d Street. As he fell unconscious to the floor, a note dropped from his hand, in which the man said he was afraid he was going crazy and asked that several matters be attended to when he died.
Coroner Shrady was unable to state whether or not the man had committed suicide. An autopsy will be performed today.
The superintendent of the establishment saw the man walking up and down in front of the place. Finally, the man started through the door, and then went out again to the sidewalk. The superintendent asked him what he wanted and followed him into the office. The Superintendent took off his coat and the man did the same. A moment later he fell forward unconscious. The superintendent lifted him to a table, and then hurriedly summoned Dr. J. H. Patrick, of No 33 west 23d street, and Dr. W. J. Nardy of No. 227 West 23d street. They worked over the man for more than an hour, but were unable to revive him.
The note which dropped from his hand read: "My nerves are in a terrible condition. I am afraid I'll get crazy."

Geo. H. Thomas, who was with the Mauser Mfg. Co. for nine years, is receiving much encouragement in his new enterprise in the shape of large orders from his friends in the trade. Mr. Thomas is now located in room 501 Heyworth building, where he represents the Woodside Sterling Co., New York; Scharling & Co., Newark, N. J. ; the Shepherd Mfg. Co., Melrose Highlands, Mass.

Geo. W. Shiebler, a former well-known silver manufacturer, who has been conducting a retail business at 7 Maiden Lane, retired from that business Saturday last, and on Monday became associated with the Mauser Mfg. Co., silversmiths, at Fifth Ave. and 31st St., to which concern he disposed of nearly all of his old designs about a year ago. Mr. Shiebler, who will be now identified with the promotion end of the Mauser company, has been connected with the jewelry trade since 1867, and with the silver industry since 1875.

A new 18-story loft and office building is planned for the property heretofore occupied by the Mauser Mfg. Co., 298 Fifth Ave. This block contains 4,100 square feet, having 30 feet of frontage on Fifth Ave. and 100 feet on 31st St. It was stated that the operation will probably be financed by a large furniture-manufacturing company, which will occupy the store and several of the upper floors for its business.

The E. Howard Clock Co. has made an unusually fine chimney hall clock, with mahogany case, for presentation to Nat Herreshoff, designer of the Reliance, by the yachting enthusiasts who were interested in the building of the famous cup depender. Among recent tower clocks constructed by the company are those for the new factory of the Mauser Mfg. Co., silversmiths, Mt. Vernon, N. Y. ; the Clark County Court-house, Marshall, Ill. ; the Government building at Sarnia, Ont., and St. Andrew’s Church, Hanover, Mass.

A MASSIVE VASE WITH NOVEL DECORATIVE EFFECTS
The fourth and last of the series of cups awarded as prizes at the 11th National Irrigation Congress, held at Ogden, Utah, Sept. 15-18, 1903, is the Havemeyer Sugar Beet Cup, and embodies a design striking, yet significant of the purpose for which it is intended.
The vase is of massive proportions and the salient designs seen in the decorations are sugar beets, which are distinctly different from the common red beet, in high relief, arranged so that their bodies are above a section of irrigated land through which flow streams of water.
The piece has two handles which are joined to the bowl at the top by tangled beet leaves, executed in relief. The inscription on the back of the trophy reads as follows : “Awarded Mr. A. A. Rhodes, Garland, Utah, for best sugar beets grown under Irrigation, Arid-States Fruit Exhibit of the Eleventh National Irrigation Congress, Sept. 15-18, 1903, Ogden, Utah, presented by H. O. Havemeyer in behalf of the American Sugar Refining Company.”
The trophy, as well as the three others presented as prizes at the Congress, which have already been illustrated and described in these columns, were designed and made by the Mauser Mfg. Co., silversmiths, New York.
