A Jewelry Palace in Boston

Boston, Mass., June 4. —The Shreve, Crump & Low Co. are now entirely removed to their spacious new building at the corner of Tremont and West Sts. The company occupy the entire building, and all the departments of the business are filled with a valuable stock of goods arranged with artistic effect.

The street floor, having an entrance on each street, is fitted with handsome counters and side show cases, filled with jewelry, silver toilet and library ornaments, rich parasols, coaching shades and umbrellas, and art stationery. At one side of the Tremont St. door is the watch repairing section, where the time is recorded from the Cambridge Observatory. Opposite is a cosy diamond room. Each of these departments is enclosed with ornamental railings and plush draperies. The rear of this floor is called the silver room, which is screened from the main part by a beautiful portiere.

The second floor contains the white and gold room, filled with bronzes and fine porcelains and pottery. One Sevres vase, representing the seasons, in the Louis XVI. style, is valued at $2,500. The third floor is filled with antiquities. The walls are covered with robin’s egg blue tapestry, from Paris. The furnishings are all specimens found in foreign countries by the agents employed by the firm. They include cathedral clocks, huge chairs of Italian oak, tapestries of the Gobelin, Flemish and Italian periods, an elaborately-carved stall taken from a cathedral in Vienna, and priceless old china and crystal. Quaint writing tables, massive bedsteads and handsome mirrors are also among the many interesting bits to be seen here, every one of which has its history. On the fourth floor are displayed lamps, gas fittings and open fire-place furnishings, and the fifth floor is filled with goods used in the interior decorations of mercantile establishments. On the sixth floor are the diamond-setting room, the engraving departments, the clock and music-box repairing rooms, etc.

Shreve, Crump & Low Co. furnish for Edward W. Kinsley Post, G. A. R., a beautiful sword, in a silver scabbard, resting in a case of solid oak, silk lined. It is a major-general's dress sword, the handle surmounted by an eagle and the oak leaves of the general's rank. On the guard is the figure of a mounted cavalryman and at the end thereof is a knight's head. The blade is of finest Damascus steel. The scabbard bears in gold the figures of a spread eagle, a knight's helmet and figures of draped flags. The sword is to be presented to Major-General Joseph Wheeler, who delivered the Memorial Day address before the Post this year. It bears the following inscription on the reverse side of the scabbard: "Maj.-Gen. Joseph Wheeler, U. S. V., from Post 113, G. A. R., Department of Massachusetts, Memorial Day, 1899."

HUB HONORS AVIATORS

Silver Replicas of Paul Revere Bowl to Be Presented to American World Fliers by Boston Chamber of Commerce

Image

Boston, Mass., Aug. 27.—The World fliers are expected to arrive in Boston the latter part of next week and trembers of the Boston Chamber of Commerce have subscribed for a presentation to each of the fliers of a sterling silver replica of the bowl made by Paul Revere. The bowls, one of which is illustrated on the front cover of this issue were designed in Boston, made in Boston, and are handled by Shreve, Crump & Low, Inc. Each bowl is engraved with the aviator's name and is thus inscribed:

Presented by the Members of the
Boston Chamber of Commerce
to
(Aviator's Name)
World Air Cruiser
(Pilot or Mechanic) (Name of Plane)
U. S. Army World Flight
On the Arrival at Boston
The First Landing in the United States
August, 1924

The Boston Chamber of Commerce also will erect at the Boston Airport a tablet commemorative of this landing. Funds for both purposes are being raised among the members of the Boston Chamber of Commerce; and from the number of contributors it is evident that there is full appreciation of the exploit of these courageous fliers.

Girl Charged with Robbing Two Boston Jewelry Firms Held in Heavy Bail—Stolen Property Recovered

Boston, Mass., -Aug. 26.—Sarah V. Dowling, alias Vera Darling, the young woman who was arrested twice recently in connection with the disappearance of diamond jewelry from the stores of Shreve, Crump & Low Co. and Bigelow, Kennard & Co., was arranged Aug. 22 in the municipal court, where Judge Wentworth held her in $2,000 bonds on the Bigelow, Kennard & Co. charge, as she had been held previously on the Shreve, Crump & Low Co. charge, for the Grand Jury.

She was unable to furnish bail and was taken to the Charles St. jail. The ring stolen from Bigelow, Kennard & Co., which was valued at upward of $1,000, has been restored to the firm. It was in the possession of Max Levine, a second-hand dealer at 112 Merrimac St., and is said to have secured the $500 cash bail on which the woman was released after her first arrest which was made on the charge preferred by Shreve, Crump & Low Co., where two pendants were missing after her visit one valued at $325 and the other at $350. Both were recovered subsequently where they had been pawned

Percival Snow Nichols, salesman for the Shreve, Crump & Low Co., was in New York over the week-end, visiting the art galleries and antique shops of that city. Mr. Nichols is an expert on antiques in the art and jewelry lines, these features, as well as the furniture of former periods, both household and ecclesiastical, coming within his province as salesman for the concern, and he loses no opportunity to further acquaint himself with the subject.
