OLIVER GATES
17, Pool Valley, Brighton
Oliver Gates - Brighton - 1851
Oliver Gates - Brighton - 1858
Members of the Gates family have been associated with the Pier as Tower-keepers for more than half-a-century, Mrs. Gates (lapidary, the mother of Mr. Oliver and Mr. Stephen Gates), succeeding Mdme. Jacobs. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Gates (the once well-known lapidaries in Pool Valley, whose shop was absorbed by Brill's Baths Company), long kept the Towers of the first pile, and were succeeded by Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Gates, the former being at one time in the employ of the late Sir James Brooke, Rajah of Sarawak. It may be of interest to state that Mrs. Gates once had the honour of weighing the Right Hon. VV. E. Gladstone. The venerable Statesman "turned the scale'' at 12 stone 9 lb.

P. CHICK
Steyne, Bognor
P. Chick - Bognor - 1858
ANSWERS
LAPIDARY.—"A. B.C." gives no hints as to where it would be desirable that the lapidary should be within a reasonable distance from, but Mr. Billings, High-street, Ventnor, Isle of Wight, was recommended to me as an honourable, upright man, and we have always had reason to speak of him as such. I have never actually seen him polish stones, but I have no doubt he would allow a customer to watch him doing so, and if "A. B. C." is in the neighbourhood of Ventnor, and writes to inquire, I believe a satisfactory answer would be received from Mr. Billings. Mr. Chick, watchmaker, Bognor, near Chichester, Sussex, is also, I believe, a most trustworthy lapidary, and I have always found him most obliging. —Sylvester.
