THE WELSH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION CHALLENGE CUP

The challenge cup is the work of the firm of Mr. J. W. Benson, Old Bond-street, and on one side of the centre is beautifully chased a spirited representation of the football game, and on the other is inscribed the words, "Welsh Football Association Challenge Cup." On either side of the base are seated two figures of the players holding the association ball. From the centre spring the two side handles, which are appropriately formed by the goal flags, entwined and supporting between them the traditional Welsh goat; while on the top are placed the finely-modelled arms of the town of Ruabon, the head-quarters of the association. The large pedestal on which the cup stands is covered with two rows of silver plates intended to bear the names of the fortunate holders.

ROYAL APPOINTMENT

It will be remembered at the time of the Royal Wedding, H.M. the King of Denmark honoured the City with a visit, and the Corporation marked the occasion by presenting His Majesty with an address of welcome, enclosed in a Gold Casket, the order for which was entrusted to Mr J. W. Benson, of Ludgate-hill and Old Bond-street, London. His Majesty has now appointed Mr Benson jeweller and goldsmith to the Danish Court in recognition of the artistic taste displayed in the production of such a worthy example of the English goldsmith's art.

ACTION AGAINST A MARQUIS

Mr. Benson, the well-known jeweller, Bond-street, sued the Marquis of Blandford, on Saturday, to recover £20 interest upon a bill. It appeared that Lord Blandford, in sending Mr. Benson a cheque for the balance of an account, made no mention of the interest, but stated in a note that the amount sent was in full of all demands." Plaintiff at once applied for the interest, but as he retained the cheque, the court held that he could not now recover.

J. W. Benson, Limited, of Bond Street and Ludgate Hill, have inaugurated the departure in the jeweller's industry that Norman and Stacey, of 118, Queen Victoria Street, have accomplished in the furniture trade, and that the Times has, moreover, adopted in literature, namely, the system of deferred payment for the upper classes. Some dainty examples of jewellery, specially prepared for Christmas, are set forth on this page. All these, as well as more costly examples, may be had on the instalment system, and can be viewed at Benson's of Bond Street, whose shop-window blaze of precious stones quite enlivens that classic region at the moment, as well as at 62 and 64, Ludgate Hill, which is the City establishment of this well-known firm. This same system of monthly payments has been put into practice with so much success for the supply of watches and jewels that the firm has now decided to supply travelling-bags and suit-cases of costly fittings and manufacture on the same principle, a special guide to purchasers being issued from both Ludgate Hill and Bond Street on application.

SCHOOLS OF DESIGN

The collection of watches shown by Mr Benson is a large, and at the same time an interesting one, and considerable attention has been paid by the exhibitor to the decoration of the cases. Many of them are extremely elegant in the design, and were the results of prizes offered by Mr Benson to the pupils of the South Kensington Schools of Design.

HOTEL SENSATION

STORY OF A THEFT FROM WELL-KNOWN JEWELLERS

At Clerkenwell Police-court, London, Leon Chartier, alias Manheim, a French, subject, was charged with stealing a gold watch, a chain, and two rings, the whole worth £60, and the property of Benson's, the Ludgate-hill jewellers.

It was said that the prisoner called at Benson's and selected the articles, directing that they should be sent to the Hotel Russell.

When an assistant took the rings to the hotel they were submitted to two ladies, and were then, it is alleged, taken out of the room by the prisoner, together with the watch.

After waiting in the room with the ladies for a long time Messrs. Benson's assistant had the hotel searched, but prisoner had disappeared.

A Fleet-street pawnbroker's manager spoke to the pawning of the rings by Chartier, and a detective mentioned that he had been informed that the watch and chain had been given to the manager of the Buckingham Palace Hotel in payment of a bill.

The accused was committed for trial.
