TCHIBOUKDJIAN & Co.

Grand Rue de Pera 401, Constantinople

Tchiboukdjian & Co. - Constantinople - 1892

A beautiful ware, which was first exhibited at the World's Fair, and which is now to be seen at the World's Fair Prize Winners' Exhibition, at the Grand Central Palace, 43d St. and Lexington Ave., New York, is the Hamedie shown by Tchiboukdjian & Co., the court jewelers of Turkey. The ware which, by special permission, is named after the Sultan, is a fine porcelain of delicate tint, over which is inlaid silver filigree. The effect is both rich and beautiful. In another beautiful ware here exhibited, a scroll design is cut through the porcelain and filled in with enamel. Tchiboukdjian & Co. have received forty-five medals for their silver, gold plate and enameled jewelry and their Hamedie and other wares.

Tchiboukdjian & Co., of Constantinople, the court jewelers of Turkey, have opened a New York branch at 1127 Broadway, near 25th St.

The largest jewelry house in Constantinople is that of Tchiboukdjian & Co.. an Armenian firm located in the Grand Rue de Pera under the offices of the American legation which are upstairs. Dr. Hatchdoor, an American dentist across the street, kindly acted as interpreter for me after my introduction to the firm by Mr. Ridde, the secretary of our legation. This firm make a specialty of enameled Turkish jewelry, spoons and small wares, made mostly in silver and gilded. They are very proud of their certificate of award from the Chicago Exposition and they may well be for they merit it in the varied and beautiful designs they originate. Bring before the mind all the colors and combinations that appear in Turkish rugs and you have an idea of their enamel work. They sent to the Chicago Fair also a model in silver which cost them $7,000 to make, of the famous drinking fountain erected by the Sultan Ahmed 400 years ago. It is the handsomest drinking fountain in Turkey and probably in the world. It stands near St. Sofia in Stamboul. The firm are also large dealers in precious stones.

M. BERGOVITZ

Cairo

A JEWELLER MURDERED

Cairo, February 13. A detective on joining a crowd in the jewellery shop of M. Bergovitz saw an Egyptian, who after having attempted to open the door of a window from the inside took a running kick, splintering the plate glass through which he stepped. The detective and the Egyptian simultaneously fired at each other. Both were seriously injured. M. Bergovitz, who was the son of a prominent Roumanian merchant, was found murdered.
