Eva’s Beauty Case - Schmuck und Styling im Spiegel der Zeiten

Eva's Beauty Case - Jewelry and Styling in the Mirror of the Times

Until 22nd January 2017

A peculiar fascination goes out of jewelery at all times. Noble metals and stones are precious and rare. For centuries, special, often almost magical properties have been assigned to them in all cultures. In addition to their beauty, they are a link and attributes of the gods, remedies and amulets as well as beauty products, merchandise and booty, evidence of economic and cultural relations, the status symbol and the expression of regional, administrative and social identifications.

The LVR-Landesmuseums Bonn has one of the most important collections of Roman jewelery north of the Alps and one of the largest and most important early medieval jewelery. Among many other object groups, the numerous extremely filigreed gold disc slides are proof of the extraordinary craftsmanship of the goldsmiths in the early Middle Ages. They drew from the technologies and the treasures of the Mediterranean late-antiquity as a Germanic tradition and created from this connection art works of a very own style.

These unique and precious finds are at the center of an exhibition dealing with the cultural history of jewelry and beauty. "Evas Beauty Case" invites you to experience the many facets of the struggle for human beauty: the show spans a unique cultural and epoch-encompassing arch - from the Stone Age to the present; From the construction of nature over the changing beauty ideals; Of precious stones as a means of beauty, a trade and booty; Of jewelry, hair and make-up as a status symbol and as an expression of regional, domineering and social identifications to the beauty and strength of the present.

Numerous interactive displays, media and hands-on stations complement the exhibition. A separate area for the participants also highlights the ideal of beauty in the course of time. In Nefertiti, Queen Elizabeth I, or even Louis XIV. "Beauty experts" reveal here, in addition to certain times, everything about the idols, tricks and secrets but also about the constraints and side effects of the everyday and familiar "beauty".
