I Gioielli Neoetruschi di Zenobio Bencivenga

The Neo-Etruscan Jewellery of Zenobio Bencivenga

Until 9th January 2017

The exhibition, open until 9 January 2017, is the fourth installment of the project Deposits in the exhibition, aimed at selecting and return to public attention, precisely through the instrument of the exhibition, objects that come from the deposits of the Museums of Lazio. At regular intervals, the projects are therefore shown in museums or in other offices of the Lazio Region.
Designed by Edith Gabrielli, Director of the Museums of New York and produced by Sonia Martone, Director of the National Museum of Palazzo Venezia, deposits shows pursues multiple objectives and concatenated. The first: to value assets for some time closed to public, and return it as well in the use and research of circuits. The second: ask the center museums, archaeological sites and places of the Polo culture that are outside the interest of the community and tourism. The third objective involves the strategic plan: it is about making strong and tangible the pact of mutual synergy and collaboration with different companies operating in the territory in the field of conservation and management of cultural heritage.
The set of jewels in Zenobio Bencivenga "Etruscan-Roman" style testifies to the refined quality level reached by the Roman goldsmith shops nineteenth century in the production of jewelery inspired by ancient models. L ' "Italian" archaeological jewelery, as defined by the proponents and exemplarily also evidenced by the production of Bencivenga, consisted not in the mere copy or imitation of antique jewelry, but in the reinterpretation and transformation of the original models parures fully nineteenth century, thanks to the addition of elements of all their era. Perfectly illustrative of this is the finery of Zenobio Bencivenga, decorated with theatrical masks and palms and, in the cuff, even from colored enamels. The Bencivenga was among the best performers of the Roman gold production in the second half of the nineteenth century and brought finery on display, donated to the State by the heirs of Bencivenga in 1936, along with two others in the same style and a bracelet "with winged and bustiers genes feminine Egyptian type ", was initially intended for the National Roman Museum, then to enter (always in agreement with the heirs) to be part of the collections of the National Museum of Palazzo Venezia since 1955.

The exhibition is therefore a new and significant chapter in the collaboration between the Museums of Lazio and the Municipality of Civita Castellana addressed to the promotion of the Museum and, through the museum, one of the most picturesque regions of Lazio, which combines the echoes of past, the myth even with the quality of life today.
