Private Confessions - The Drawings of Jewelery Artists

Private Confessions - Die Zeichnung der Schmuckkünstler

Until 7th May 2017

For the first time, a "jewelery exhibition" is devoted to drawing, bringing a complex, so far underestimated theme to the center of the discussion. 36 contemporary jewelery artists from all over the world present a selection of drawings, which have been created to accompany their object works. The range extends from the sketch, which is oriented to the concrete execution of the piece of jewelery, to the drawing as an independent artistic manifestation. The panorama of the exhibited works ranges from the minimalistic gesture, reduced to the utmost, through written confessions, to baroque, narrative opulence and the fusion with jewelery sculpture.

In addition to about 400 drawings, selected jewels as well as installations and sketchbooks can be seen. The exhibition presents a new chapter for the reception and reflection of contemporary authors' jewelery, which has become particularly important in Munich, attracting thousands of visitors every year to the Bavarian capital.

The drawing of jewelery artists reveals all the features of creative production. This is where the intimate and often inaccessible dialogue with the creative impulse manifests itself. The drawing reveals the very personal manuscript before it is altered and even disciplined by matter and form. At the same time, every graphic expression calls for its recognition as an autonomous valence, as an artistic contribution to the process - as a design, but above all also as a conceptual extension and aesthetic note, often even as an independent work. The artistic confrontation seeks its paths, and unfolds itself also in the spontaneous gesture, in the defeat of the "primaidea," as in the final form.

These traces are followed by exhibition and publication, hence the title "Private Confessions". The international jewelery artists, including the renowned "celebrities" of the metier, let us participate in their spontaneous inspiration, in the stages of their work, in conflict and passion in their exploration of matter. Many of the protagonists are active in various fields, often as painters or draughtsmen.

The drawing, as presented for the first time in the exhibition, testifies to the processes and developments that affect the artistic genres, the artistic identity. It can be interpreted as a symptom of the opening up of the perspective and accompanies not only the jewelery discourse, but also proves above all as a counterforce and counterbalance to all functional limitations and obligations of the discipline.

The exhibition, presented by the curator of the exhibition, Dr. Ellen Maurer Zilioli, is an expert in this field, selected artists and her work offer a wide-ranging view of the possibilities of drawing as an artistic medium - especially in the area of jewelery.

Renowned protagonists such as Hermann Jünger (1928-2005) are represented by international representatives such as the Czech artist Eva Eisler (born in 1946). With Pedro Sequeira (born 1976) or Despo Sophocleous (born 1977), younger positions are taken into account, as did Claus Bury (born 1946) or Thomas Gentille (born 1936). Fine pencil drawings stand against gestural watercolors, sketched, small-scale sketches or elaborate collages prove the discussion with the medium as well as the concise manuscript of the author. Particularly in the grouping, there is a lively dialogue, not only between drawing and object but also between the presented artistic positions.

The exhibition is linked to the previous presentation of the jewelry in the Museum Villa Stuck, according to GlAmour. Love for jewelry - A statement from 10 international artists (2015) and AFTERMATH of art jewelery. Jewelry from Oslo and Munich (2013).
