Made for the Table

Until 24th February 2019

Explore the evolution of silver tableware and dining conventions from 1600 to today through the silver collection of the Goldsmiths' Company, displayed alongside other crafts and Osterley's rarely seen silver collection.

From candlesticks and cutlery to serving dishes, silverware has historically been the focal point of dining and it continues to add stylish accents to today’s tables.

This exhibition presents 500 years of silver from the Goldsmiths’ Company Collection, alongside contemporary silversmiths and artisans especially commissioned for this exhibition. Discover the relationship between Osterley and the Goldsmiths’ Company, with rare pieces from Osterley’s collection inside Robert Adam’s interiors.

Four wonderful display cabinets in the Entrance Hall, themed to highlight various aspects of the dining experience, feature some of the oldest and most precious objects in the Goldsmith’s collection. The centerpiece is a bespoke table in the Yellow Breakfast Room, laid with a range of newly commissioned objects delicately crafted by contemporary silversmiths to show how the patronage and skills of the past, continue to this day. The juxtaposition between new and old, goes to show the evolution of tableware yet also the constancy of our dining needs over the centuries.

The beauty and elegance of these objects are at once complemented and contrasted with Osterley’s own silver collection. Collected by the Child family over successive generations, the collection by the 1782 inventory was substantial. Silver was featured across many areas of the house, but the most significant collection was housed in the Eating Room which consisted of a dinner service of sixty plates, four tureens and over thirty dishes amongst other items. To celebrate the Made for the Table exhibition, we will be returning some of the unique collection back in its traditional home in the Eating Room to highlight the historic links between the Goldsmith’s Company and Osterley.

Opening hours: 11am - 4pm daily (Closed Christmas Day)
