The Golden Age of Silver - Silver Objects from Historic Hungary

Until 31st August 2019

The BÁV is preparing for the summer season with a special treat: The Golden Age of Silver - Silver Objects from Historic Hungary undertakes to present the silver work of our country from the 16th to the turn of the 20th century. Nearly 150 works from 12 important domestic collections give a representative picture of the period's goldsmiths. From everyday utensils to liturgical objects to rarities of collections, visitors can view the virtuoso works of the greatest goldsmiths until August 31st in the BÁV Apististerm. The exhibition is part of the BÁV 100th Anniversary Celebration Series.

Silver objects have always been popular, they have been used to make silver and silverware for use in treasure trades. BÁV is in a unique position to come into contact with almost every major collector of silver objects during its nearly 100-year auction history, allowing experts to select from the highest quality works of art and masterpieces unknown to the general public. Approximately 150 works from 12 important domestic collections give a representative picture of the goldsmith's art of historical Hungary between the 16th and 20th century.

Such a comprehensive exhibition of Hungarian goldsmiths has not been held so far in private collections, and a catalog has been prepared for the exhibition, which, besides describing the objects, contains special test stamps, master marks and year letters in the 1920s. art auction. This exhibition is the first stop of the jubilee celebration series, with which the oldest operating company of Hungary wishes to actively participate in the exploration and preservation of the national cultural treasures and in the presentation of the cultural history mediated by works of art.

The exhibition material was grouped by geographical area. Showcases showcase almost all the typical types of the genre, whether it is silver for dining, ornaments, ornaments, ornaments or special collectors' rarities. The collection not only includes works by famous masters such as Joseph Saint Peter or Samuel Libay, but also works by lesser-known goldsmiths.

At the exhibition, the goldsmiths of Buda are represented, among other things, by the masterpieces of the goldsmiths liberated after the Turkish conquest, marked with three towers and then a gate of the castle. A rich treat is the richly carved doughpipes, which, besides the masters of the Buda guilds of Pest and Buda, were made by independent goldsmiths from the Zichy family's Óbuda estate. The section on Eastern Hungary is worth delving into the virtuoso decorations of Dániel Koromzay's Décor in Baroque style, while Western Hungary is, among other things, represented by the clean, elegant forms of salt and spice racks made in Papa. The most exquisite wine tasting and unique canals of the exhibition came from the workshops of Banská Bystrica, but the graceful Empire wine pot or the lavishly decorated Rimaszombat goblet is an example of the richness of the region. The silver objects of the Southland are presented, among others, by a Baroque ciborium in Arad and a Biedermeier sugar box in Subotica. The prosperity of legendary Transylvanian workshops is also due to the fact that, since the 16th century, much of the annual tax on the Turkish port had to be delivered in goldsmiths. In addition to the masters of Sibiu, Brasov, Saxon and the Hungarian masters of Cluj-Napoca, the works of the masters of cities less known from the point of view of silver history, such as Bistrita or Fogaras, can also be found in the exhibition. The oldest object of the exhibition, a Transylvanian goblet, made in 1596, also came from this area.
