I was in Cambridge yesterday, and with an hour or so to spare I decided to check out the silver on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum.

There was not a huge amount of silver to be seen at this time at the Fitzwilliam, but what it lacked in quantity it made up for in quality.

Amongest the most noticeable of exhibits are a fine pair of wine coolers made in 1808 by Paul Storr, a large silver gilt Race Cup by Peter and Ann Bateman in 1799, a superb jug of askos form made by Storr in 1836 and a similar piece by William Elliott made in 1839 also to be seen was a splendid 1707 Monteith.

Two pairs of Candlesticks by John Winter & Co., assayed in 1774 and 1775 at Sheffield were also of special note.

The Museum also has a fine collection of Continental silver Beakers and Standing Cups. Also on show is a display of modern British silver.
