Interesting marks....

Post by Goldstein »

Hi all -

have seen some fruit knives with "interesting" marks:

1) I. Sazikov, silver 84 Cloisonné, the notorious binary 84 and the ant-like St. George

2) E. Kolin, silver 84, simple quality, early mark

What do you think?

Hi,
Genuine ordinary blade, the tip has been manipulated, shortened and reshaped.
Handle is not Sazikov, either taken from elsewhere or faked.
Assembled piece, or ``конструкtор`` in modern Russian jargon.

Hmmmm! I share AG2012 opinion. In addition, this mark ЭК is not Erik Kollin. He did not either make cutlery but mostly jewellery. The mark is an other Finn's: Edvard/Eduard Johan Kortman. He also worked with Fabergé in St. Petersburg and was a supplier to the Imperial Court.
Postnikova has made a mistake with #1441. Erik Kollin did not use Cyrillic letters in his mark. He used the Latin letters EK only.

Hi -
is there a serious source for that or just this nebulous insertion?

If I say it is Kortman, it is Kortman. I have no reason to fool anybody. Moreover, I wrote that Kollin didn't use Cyrillic letters but Kortman did. This is based on Ulla Tillande-Godenhielm's researches. Believe it or is not your call.

Señores! Let's stop! You are experts of the Russian silver, isn't it? ))

Sazikov's company closed its work at the end of the 80th of the nineteenth century (1887).

Knives with the enamel drawing is typical product of Ivan Saltykov workshop. It's o.k.

Hi,
Concentrating on the blade; measured by image meter it`s narrower close to the handle and that`s not due to possible sharpening because cutting edge is on the opposite side and besides, even if it`s cutting edge, it could not have been worn to get blunt close to the handle. There seem to be traces of filing (darker area) or just a shadow, which I doubt. Blade bolster was filed and adjusted to fit the handle at ``A``. The tip is not consistent with fruit or desert knives.
Although it`s difficult to judge based on the image, there is no doubt the blade being of uneven width. That`s not normal.

Hi all -
when I posted this 2 fruit knives I wanted to show wrong quality, wrong marks and wrong names = fakes. Therefore the title "interesting"! Obviously wrong!
Second try:
For me is this kind of Russian silver really interesting - it shows that everything is saleable and nobody cares about the facts.
It seems that nowadays fakes are almost more appreciated than originals. The buyers are without any experience and absolutely uncritical. They do not know either the individual manufacturers or the corresponding production processes - quite apart from the usual model variants of a fruit knife. For a better understanding how fruit knives have looked at the time, I show 3 contemporary models from my collection. Even the layman immediately recognizes the difference in style, design and processing quality. Apart from the improved functionality, the aesthetic appeal is also significantly higher.

@Goldstein
What is interesting is that first you proclaim:
1) Sazikov, silver....
2) E. Kollin, silver.... early mark
When it turns out that neither of the aforementioned master are correct, the knifes suddenly become fakes!?
