Nichols & Plinke

Post by Goldstein »

Hi -
found a napkin ring - typical quality - from Nichols & Plinke. Acording to the assaymarks it was assayed in the year 1899 -1908 in St. Petersburg.
The firm existed from 1829 - 1898 only. In my opinion this assaymark existed earlyer than from 1899 on - we had a discussion about that lately here on the forum. Maybe someone has an plausible explanation.

The explanation is rather simple. The year 1898 has not been verified as a ending year for the company. It only tells us that in 1898 the company was located on Snameskaya uliza 36 in St Petersburg (address book of 1898) and was owned by Waldemar Nicols/Nicholls. It doesn't mean that the company ceased to exist after that. The exact ending year is actually not known. My source tells me that the ending year should read "around 1900". That also explains the hallmark of 1899.
