Russian silver??

Post by amena »

A friend of mine has this icon and asked for my opinion.

The marks are somewhat odd and I do not even know whether they are Russian or rather fantasy.
An expert's opinion would be appreciated.
Thanks for attention

Hi,
First of all, is it hand painted ? Only hands and face or the entire image of Christ ?
Better close up images of the marks would be helpful. Cannot even tell the assayer (Ivan Lebedkin ?). Kokoshnik is distorted, ``84`` does not look right.

Hi amena -

nice authentic icon!
Moscow 1896-1908, assayer: Iwan Lebedkin. Maker of the Oklad (frame): Mnekin, Iwan N. 1896-1909
The artist is unknown (as mostly) - around Moscow were countless painters but only a few are known by name.

Thank you for your opinions.
The icon is not mine, so I did not try to disassemble the oklad to see what's under.
And I did not even notice that in that tiny Kokoshnik, there are also the initials of the assayer.
It seemed rather strange to me that mark in form of a ear of corn.
If I have an opportunity I'll have sharper photos and I will ask permission to look under the riza.

Here are some better photos. But that Kokoshnik is damn small.

I did not have permission to disassemble riza, and it is better so, because silver is really very thin.
Best
