Need help with Russian Silver 84 Belt Buckle

Post by kingpin777 »

Hey anyone help me out if they know anything about this Caucasus belt buckle? Can't tell by the marks the details of origin and authenticity except that its 84 grade sterling silver. Any help is appreciated!

Hi,
Rather common Caucasus souvenir belt buckle in niello technique.
Marks are upside down.
Maker`s initials BA in Postnikova reference book can be:

823 Vasily Antonov Krasnogo village, Kostroma 1880 /1890

Moscow 1880s
2271 and 2272 V.Akimov
2273 and 2274 Vasily Agafonov
2275 to 2278 Vasily Andreev (can be excluded because after 1908)

Sharper images of the assay office mark are needed to distinguish the ship for Kostroma and StGeorge for Moscow.

This Belt Buckle was made in Novocherkassk 1882-1899.
It isn't " part of the national costume ". It was souvenir for the memory of the Caucasus.
You see an inscription on a buckle - "Кавказ" (Caucasus)

Hello again,
Novocherkassk was known for Caucasus souvenirs in niello. Not a single maker is identified in PL.
This is the mark you should see with good magnifying glass (rather complicated coat of arms simplified in the mark used in late 19th century).
