English mug - but who made it?

Post by lucycat »

Can someone help me with the date on this mug, and identify the manufacturer, please. The mug

is about 4 1/2 inches high and 3 1/2 inches in diamter. The marks

look to me like they are London, 1750, but I'm no expert. The maker mark looks like PTG or RTG. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi

Well done. 1750 is the correct date, Londond is the correct town. I will note that you are slighly amiss with the maker. The bottom has bee rubbed away, as the mark is RT over CG (diamond shape marks usually consist of 4 letters). This was the mark of Richard Gurney and Thomas Cook, whose mark was entered in 1734 (see Jacksons 3rd edition page 187, 6th mark from the bottom).

Cheers

Hi, It looks like the makers are Thomas Cooke with Richard Gurney. This mark was entered 30th July 1750 Foster Lane London. (See The Marks of the London Goldsmiths and Silversmiths 1697-1837) John P Fallon)
Kind regards Cas
