silver ladle, turned wood handle - advice on marks

Post by ruthw »

Hello silver lovers! I would appreciate your opinions/advice on the following marks on my silver ladle.
I think it's Sterling, London, 1827 - (or could that "m" be 1787? the m's for both years look the same to me on the date chart).
Am I on the right track? Or could they be Chinese pseudo marks?
The marks are applied somewhat haphazardly. With the lion passant and leopard head with crown upside down to each other.
The one that looks like an "R" is the maker mark? It could also be a picture of something and not an "R"?

Thank you so much!

Well the Lion Passant is in the form used in London in the 1739 to 1756 period so the dateletter "m" would be 1747/48 although it looks a little odd.
However as a buckle collector I'm not familiar with the dateletters of that period !

I agree that this is 1747/48. And, yes, the "R" is part of the maker's mark. Nothing springs to mind immediately but I'll have look through my references in slow time later today.

I think that the maker is probably David Hennell. Here is the mark from your ladle suitably cropped and rotated together with my exemplar of Hennell's mark:

Hennell registered this mark c1739 and it was still in use in 1755.
