Is this mark legit?

Post by divadonna »

Hello,
I cannot make sense of this mark. Does anyone recognize the maker?

It appears to me that the C&W has been pressed on top of another mark (perhaps a trefoil?). Does anyone else see this? This mark is on the back of a tray 27x16".

Also there is not a date mark. Any explanations?

Thank you in advance for any insight.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

The mark of Catchpole & Williams appears to be over-striking the mark of the maker, Charles Stuart Harris.

Further investigation would be required to explain the lack of the date letter.

Please check the around the rim of the gallery as a very similar tray by Charles Stuart Harris that I found online has a full set of marks there and a subset on the underside of the base which does not include the date letter...just like yours.

cheers,

Hi,
Catchpole & Williams Ltd were also retailers.
This Charles Stuart Harris gallery tray has date letter ‚‚h‚‚ for 1903 in scroll pierced border.
Search for date letter elsewhere in your tray.

Thank you gentlemen. I will revisit the tray to search for hidden marks. I appreciate your expertise and insight.
