B'ham maker ? plus 1913 or 1938 ?

Post by Jayway »

My first question to this forum regards a silver cigarette case I have recently inherited. I've got as far as Birmingham, but cannot make out whether its 1913 or 193. Maybe the makers mark would shed light on this, but I can't really make that out either. Any help would be appreciated.
Try as I may, I cannot add a picture, even after reading the instructions !!!

Thanks for your patience - I really had no idea what a publicly accessible web thingy was !!!

I hope you can now see the marks.

This is a fairly distorted / damaged mark of William Hutton & Sons Ltd, a company which ceased trading in 1930, so that puts the date letter as the lower case "o" of 1913. The mark should look a bit like this:

Note that the punch shape is slightly different, but the formation of the letters will be the same.

Thank you so much. Just as a matter of interest, any theories on the damage / worn mark as to how it happens ?

Thanks again

It looks like it wasn't struck properly in the first place with the punch not square on to the surface resulting in a lighter or even non-existent impression on the lower left part as we look at your picture; then another attempt was made with no better results but showing a doubling of the mark. Not a very expert job.
