TG Makers Mark + What type of spoon is this?

Post by shub33 »

Could anyone please eyeball this repoussé spoon and help me identify the possible TG maker? Also, I often second guess British date marks. I think it most resembles 1791/1792. What does the 4th symbol reresent? It may be difficult to see with all the patina but this is how it shows: (1) TG, (2) lion passant, (3) T, (4) F in an oval and the (5) Anchor for Birmingham. What are the other markings on the handle? Lastly, what type of monkey tail spoon is this, a dessert or berry spoon? Thank you in advance for looking.

Hi

I believe closer examination of the 5th mark will show it to be an uncrowned leopards head of the London Assay Office and not the anchor of Birmingham as all other hallmarks point to this.
T G is the sponsor mark of the London importer, Thomas Glaser. His mark was registered in Jul 1886 at the London Assay Office
Date letter T = 1894
F = "Foreign" mark used by all assay offices 1867-1904

Maker marks appear to be Hanau pseudo marks belonging to B Neresheimer & Son who specialised in producing this style of " reproduction antiques". Please check your second mark against the example labelled S520 on the link below:

Sorry,

I forgot about your question regarding the type/purpose of the spoon. Dimensions are really required but my first thought is a tea caddy spoon.

Thank you, Steve, you are a wealth of information. I appreciate your time. You are correct with the uncrowned lion. The spoon measures 5".

Also if you had to date the spoon where would you place it? Thank you again for your help.

Hi Shannon,

The spoon is dated to 1894 when it was imported into the UK. It was newly made at that time and made for export from Hanau to cater for the market which was looking back to earlier periods. This was the point of pseudo marks....to make the item appear older and antique when it was newly made.

At 5" in length, it is a little long in my opinion for a caddy spoon but the shape and the fact it was imported to the UK still make me think this is it's most likely purpose. Wait and see if anyone else else may has a better idea.

Cheers,
Steve

Antique pastoral or not...rising sun, little angel, & lambs!? Anyone see possibilities of wealthy people spending lavishly on the daily chore of getting food down the mouths of precious darling infants? Overall 5" would be about bowl 1" w x 2" l, handle 3". Designed to be hung daily for prominent display (hooked handle). Entertainment is half the job of getting gruel down their gullets, and this reads like storybook land. Fluted edges make it easy to catch chin drippings (for lack of a better term).

Thank you, Steve, Peter, and Traintime for your input. The measurements are as follows - 5" overall. The bowl is 2" in length and 1 3/4" in width. The handle is 3". I think maybe it is more of a cream ladle as Peter suggested or a dessert spoon. Here is another side profile picture.

It might be a "Bon Bon Spoon" which was used for dispensing little candy pieces, or maybe a "nut spoon" used for nut distribution?
