Johannes Schuyl rat tail spoon, date letter question

Post by R ingo »

Hello,
I have a rat tail spoon from Johannes Schuyl from Amsterdam with date letter "S".

Is it the letter for about 1703 or about 1728?

Kind regards,
Ringo

Hi Ringo, based upon the shape of the crown of town mark and lion rampant I should say 1728.

Best,
Peter

Hello Peter,

I thank you for you very much your help. I expected this answer, but I hoped that the spoon could be older. But anyway it is a nice spoon.

Thanks and best regards,
Ringo

Dear Ringo,

An answer to your first question in 1703 or 1728, Peter has answered correctly.
(Btw: 1703 = letter R, 1704 = letter S)
Year letter S of 1728 is correct

Johannes Gerrits Schuyl
Born: Amsterdam 1679
Died: Amsterdam 1728
Silversmith - Amsterdam (1699-1728)
Married to: Catrina Comans
Born: Amsterdam 1704

This is not possible, because he is deceased in 1728.

Best Regards
Dendriet.

The final text of 1728 (deceased), you better forget, is a misunderstanding :)))

Hello Dendriet,

my english is not very good and maybe that there was a misunderstanding. But I have no doubt that Peter was right.

Hi Ringo,

When I read your text: ". I expected this answer, but I hoped That the spoon could be older," I wanted to explain this. "

When you go back in time, then the spoon gets older, but when you go on in time than the silversmith will be older
That is why I feel the need to respond, and I had to mention these dates.
Here lies the cause and reason for my mistake in time.

Therefore, this has to do nothing at all with Peter.
I am sorry that I have given that impression to you.
A new experience

It was late
I was tired
And the rest did the wine.
