Help ID Marks on Silver Purse

Post by citychamps »

I think this may be Dutch however not positive. On the silver parts of what was a purse, there are several marks, one a pictorial head mark, facing left, a 'MC' mark (presumably the maker), a pictorial lion mark, and what may be a heraldic eagle mark. On the center section is found "PH" and another unfamiliar mark. Can you help?

Hi, welcome to the forum.
Image
The maker's mark is P.H. in a rectangle attributed to: Pleun Hoogendoorn city of Willige Langerak(today part of Schoonhoven) registered in the cities of Utrecht and Schoonhoven from 7th Juli 1882 - 2nd August 1900(died)

Your third image shows the year letter, a Gothic P (upside down) for the year 1899.

Your image (pictorial head) enhanced and cut shows the office mark or Minerva head with regional assay office letter M for Schoonhoven
The other marks marks: MC, heraldic eagle and pictorial lion are well known Dutch pseudo/fantasy marks and used to pretend 18th century.
Herewith another example same maker's mark in combination with pseudo marks, seen on spoon

Your image does not show a Dutch standard mark, the lion. For more information about the marks see:
