please ID date mark on spoon

Post by silveraussie »

I bought this spoon at a church fair about 3 months ago, my take on the hallmarks are - maker simon levy 1818/1828 - assay exeter - date letter 1820-1, this seems a little odd to me with 1818 inscribed under the monograms, am i correct with the marks or is there something fishy going on with this spoon ?.
thanks silveraussie

There's nothing wrong with the spoon. Sometimes engraved dates do differ from the date letter. Why? Your guess is as good as mine. Perhaps one spoon in a set went missing, and they replaced it with a new spoon.
