Help with marks

Post by joho »

Hi- can anyone help with these marks on a fiddle pattern teaspoon c 1820. Maker possibly I.L. Date letter R seems to be over striking another mark, with possibly a turret in it. Newcastle or Exeter? Thanks John

Hi John,

I would say that it's John Lake of Exeter, 1813.

Hi,

That's more likely John Legg of Exeter. He was sending spoons to the Assay Office between 1809 and 1814, fitting in with your spoon.
John Lake was a small-time jeweller of Taunton. He sent 13 gold rings to the Assay Office on one occasion in 1800.
