Monogram Silver spoon

Post by TheSilverBug »

Hello,
This silver spoon has me a little confused. It is marked ?W, King, Lion passant, Newcastle, Crowned leopard, Y .
The year date in particular puzzles me since there are several almost identical Y hallmarks for Newcastle.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Some Newcastle dates are difficult to assign because of the similarity of the letters, but this is fortunately an easy one because the William IV duty mark was in use from 1832 to 1844 and the only Y during this period is that for 1837. The maker, TW, is Thomas Wheatley.
