Dollar Academy fob

Post by JanGroen »

Good Day
This is the latest fob medal to my collection. It is a Scottish tug of war medal from dollar Academy. It is not plated but don't contain any hallmarks, only initials of the makers (K & S)Would this be a sterling medal without hallmarks or do one get coin silver medals in Scotland? Any information about the history of medal will be welcome.

Dankie
Jannie

Not likely to be Rotherham & Sons: they were London based watch and clock importers and registered variations of the 'R&S' incuse mark at Edinburgh in 1926 and 1960. We do have an unidentified R&S maker in Dundee at about the right time (R&S in an oblong, c1825-1840) here at the Incorporation of Goldsmiths. We do see a fair amount of provincial Scottish silver without proper legal hallmarks: even though provincial makers were obliged by law to send their work for hallmarking to Edinburgh, many evaded the process. in 1836 the law was tightened up, but makers still tried to work round it.
