Maker's mark "J*W" and date mark on imported Glasgow watch

Post by jamesinealing »

Hi, I have a Glasgow imported watch case that I am trying to confirm the maker's mark and date for. I have done some research and the most likely candidates are James Weir and 1927 but I cannot find an exact match for the style of the maker's mark, and the plain oval surround of the 'e' date mark doesn't feel right either! Finally, this one may be for a specialist watch forum, but does anyone know anything about the "The Time Day" mark/brand on the back?

I would be grateful for any advice, thanks.

Hi,
The following quote is from here:

http://www.vintagewatchstraps.com/sponsorsmarks.php#j
There are a large number of Glasgow registered JW marks. Eight are of conventional cameo form with raised letters inside variously shaped shields, with a first registration date of 1891.
A larger number of punches, around 22, have the initials stamped incuse with no shield but with a symbol, such as a heart, diamond, triangle, square, equals sign, swastika, etc., etc., between the letters.

This mark has been noted by the Edinburgh Incorporation of Goldsmiths and appears on a Glasgow mark registration plate but is "Unidentified".

Thank you both for the comments - really interesting. I presume there's no question about the date being 1927 then.,just before the company was wound up (no watch pun intended!)

Yes, the date is definitely 1927 (or to be strictly accurate 1927/28 as the assay year did not start on 1 January - Glasgow date letters changed in July). Note also that there is no firm evidence for J*W being James Weir.
