Jasper Kelly?? Another Maker not 100% sure of

Post by dartsil »

Interesting spoon which measures 172mm in length.

The spoon is only marked with {IK} and no other marks. The closest match I have found is that of Jasper Kelly (1447 Grimwades) but he is entered as a gold worker.

Can anyone shine some light on maker and purpose of spoon?

This could well be the work of John Keith of Banff.

Hi Trev, again I had attributed to John Keith but again thought I would question my initial thoughts as again refering to Turners book theres no mention of just {IK} as one of his marks.
Any idea to the purpose of this spoon?.. Like the Erskine of Aberdeen spoon I thought I would post here to see if anyone else hit upon the Scottish Provincial angle.

Further research Trev,

I am now pretty confident it is a masking spoon and 99% sure it will be by John Keith.

Now thats not a bad turn up for the books seen as I managed to get it for £8

Hello, just another spoon and another IK mark for perusal.

From my very limited knowledge of Scottish spoons I believe this spoon could well be an example of a toddy spoon. Although this spoon lacks any extra Scottish Provincial marks I felt it is likely to be a John Keith item. Checking the forum I found this post to add my photos to, and hopefully get some more opinions.

Hi Fishless,

Yes, I would agree that this is the work of John Keith. What is the length of the ladle?

Hello and thank you Dognose for the review of my photo. I am very pleased to own this Provincial Scottish spoon by John Keith. I just measured the spoon. It is 17 cms long and 4 cms across the bowl.

Sounds more like a cream ladle.
