Scottish Provincial?

Post by bstaunto »

Hey team,

Just got this sauce lade.

To me, it doesn''t look very 'Scottish', but I haven't handled a lot of it, so would love some other opinions.

A bit of a mystery (partly because I can't find my Scottish Provincial Marks book!). Three marks, each punched twice. I thought it look like I and N, so maybe Inverness? And then the third stamp which looks more like a running fox than a lion.

Any help would be great.

Cheers,

Ben

Hi Ben,

You may be on to something with your thoughts on Inverness, although the camel is the animal we normally associate with that town, I just came across this mark of Alexander MacRae and although this mark is not exactly the same as yours, it's worthy of further research in that direction.
